Nellyadi, 14 Oct 2017: Nithin KR, a 16-year-old first PUC commerce student from St George PU College, Nellyadi of Dakshina Kannada district, is the talk of the town for his brave act.

A resident of Kannahithlu near Kokkada, when Nithink got to know that his younger sister, 12-year-old Sharanya K was bitten by a snake, he sucked out the snake venom and administered her with first aid.

Speaking to Bangalore Mirror, Nithin said, “The incident took place about 200 meters away from our house on Sunday at about 4:30pm. We have cattle at home and my father had gone to deliver milk and my mother was busy working in the cattle shed. It had just stopped raining and my sister, who is studying in class seven, went to deliver milk to a nearby house. She returned after five minutes and, initially, she did not say anything. But her pain was increasing so she told me that she accidentally stepped on a snake and that it had bitten her.

“My father had left his mobile phone at home and, the moment she told me about the incident, I tried to call our neighbours but nobody was picking up my calls. I remembered my grandmother’s advice on how to act in case of a snake bite. I tied her left leg (near the snake bite) with a piece of cloth and, with a blade, cut the wound open a little and sucked out the poisoned blood.

“By then, my uncles Jagadish and Yogish arrived and they rushed her to a nearby private hospital on a bike. Since the hospital did not have the necessary medicine, they suggested that we should take her to a private hospital in Mangaluru and an ambulance was arranged. She was at the hospital for two days in the ICU. She is now back home,” Nithin said.

Asserting that he was never scared, Nithin said, “At that point, I knew that the life of my sister is important. I was not scared. I saw that her leg was swollen. We have not identified the snake species. Soon after the incident, we went in search of the snake but could not find it. I am happy that my act is being recognised and my sister, too, has stopped fighting with me.”

Nithin is the son of K Raju, an agriculturist, and Padmavathi, a homemaker. His younger brother Bharat is in class nine. Nithin’s father K Raju said, “I am proud of my son. He acted without thinking about himself. He told us that, at that point, his sister’s life was important,” he said.

Eliyas MK, principal, St George PU College, Nellyadi, said, “We appreciate the courage of the boy as well as his love for his sister.”
