Mumbai: Torrential rains put general life out of gear; train services worst hit

Mumbai, 29 Aug 2017: The financial capital of nation–Mumbai was marooned in floods caused by torrential rains since Monday, August 28 night. The general life was thrown out of gear by the record rains since July 26, 2005.
The high velocity gales damaged shanties in slums with people running for shelters. The train commuters had harrowing experiences in CR, WR and Harbor Line because they were running late due to flooded tracks. A barrier wall along Harbor Line was collapsed at Chunnabatti, here, disrupting services for an hour or so. The long distance train services including local trains were also disrupted on CR owing to derailing of Duronto train at Asangaon, near Karzat. The collision of cars on busy Mazgaon Freeway further worsened traffic.
Despite the civic body taken precautions ahead of monsoon, the torrential rains caused water logging and flash floods on low-lying areas.
The people who planned to take part in procession of immersing the idol of Lord Ganesh were disappointed owing to torrential rains that transformed the suburbs into sea.
The law enforcement agencies deployed security at the sea shore, lakes and along river to facilitate immersion of idol of Lord Ganesh.
Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis was present at the control room set up by civic body to monitor the situation.
