’Pledge to keep Shirva Grama clean’ requests DC Priyanka Mary at Lions Waste Management

Shirva/Manchakal, 12 Aug 2017: DC Priyanka Mary requested all the students of St. Mary’s College Shirva to take pledge “To keep Shirva Grama clean free of waste on streets and make Shirva a shining Place”. She was speaking on the occasion of “Waste Management of Solid and Liquid waste” organized by Lions Club of Shirva in association with Shirva Gram Panchayat and St. Mary’s College Shirva.

 

She said our Udupi District has everything we need. We are all well settled, have good education, educational institutions, and hospitals and economically sound. However, we lack proper sanitation. Waste is dumped everywhere and no one bothers to clean or at least avoid throwing dump, plastics on the streets. It is just dumped everywhere and due to this street dogs are multiplied and create problems to pedestrians. She also requested students to use their own bottles to take to colleges instead of buying from shops or using disposable items. It is better to use steel cups and plates rather than disposable plates which are thrown everywhere after the party or meal is over and its hazardous. Students are aware of the problems and have the capacity to keep our area clean but we only lack will power. She said further we will today resolve to “Reduce, Re-use and Re-Cycle“ waste in whatever capacity we can.. Let’s come together and fight for this cause she said. She thanked Lions Club Shirva and Shirva Gram Panchayat for taking up this issue seriously and organizing this event to bring awareness among the students to a better and clean Shirva and our District.

 

The event “Free of sold and liquid waste” began at 9:45am on 11th August 2017 at St. Mary’s College premises as DC of Udupi Ms. Priyanka Mary was accorded a ceremonial welcome by NCC cadres along with Don Bosco School band and she was escorted from Church premises to the College accompanied by members of Lions Club Shirva and School Band.

 

 

President of Lions Club Shirva Mr. Julian Rodrigues accorded a warm welcome to the Chief Guest DC Priyanka Mary and other guests on dais namely Rev. Fr. Stany Tauro (Correspondent, St. Mary’s Educational Institutions), Ms. Varija Poojari (President, Shirva Gram Panchayat), Mr. Wilson Rodrigues (Member, Jilla Panchayat) and many other dignitaries present on the occasion.

 

In his keynote address Wilson Rodrigues said that this waste management meet will bring awareness among the students to create and maintain Shirva Grama free of waste, litter. DC Ms. Priyanka has taken many initiatives to implement strictly to follow the standards as she is a roll model herself. Therefore every student must realise her dream of clean Udupi District with the support of gram panchayat and people of Shirva.

 

Fr. Stany Tauro said that Pope Francis has taken the first initiative towards green world and has requested everyone to protect the earth. Many questioned his expertise in this issue but today everyone is following his initiative and in India we have initiated drive called “Swatch Bharat”. He appreciated DC Ms. Priyanka along with Lions Club and Shirva Gram Panchayat for organizing this very important waste management meet and he hoped that the students of St. Mary’s College pledge to take this project further.
