Only teenage son of IAS couple commits suicide

Mumbai, 18 Jul 2017: An 18-year-old son of a bureaucrat couple committed suicide in south Mumbai on Tuesday. The body of Manmath Mhaiskar, son of MHADA CEO Milind and Urban Development Department principal secretary Manisha Mhaiskar, was found outside the 21-storeyed Dariya Mahal building on Nepean Sea Road. The police said prima facie, Manmath appeared to have jumped from the building’s terrace around 7.30 am.

 

The victim was the only child of his parents, and resided with his family at Malabar Hill. The police said a passer-by spotted the body lying in a pool of blood between two cars, and dialled the control room. “The victim’s head was smashed and he was declared ‘brought dead’ at JJ Hospital,” Senior Inspector Bhaskarrao Sawant from Malabar Hill Police Station said.

 

The police said Manmath had left his home around 7 am, saying he was going to meet a friend -- the son of a well-known lawyer – at Nepean Sea Road. The victim’s friend helped the police identify the body, but said no meeting took place between him and Manmath. “The Malabar Hill police have registered an accidental death report,” DCP Rashmi Karandikar, spokesperson of the Mumbai Police, said.

 

The body was handed over to the family in the afternoon and the funeral at the Chandanwadi crematorium was attended by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, politicians from across party lines, and bureaucrats.
