Udupi, 26 May 2017: Manipal University Press (MUP) celebrated the release of its 100th publication at the Gangubai Hanagal Auditorium in Manipal Centre for Philosophy and Humanities here, on Wednesday, May 24. There was no pomp and show, but the joy in every heart was discernible. It was a great moment for the MUP team as a milestone was achieved. It came sooner than expected, in less than six years. The cup of joy was full to the brim.

‘I had set a target of one book every month in the first year, two every month in the second and so on till five in the fifth year,’ said Dr H Vinod Bhat, vice-chancellor of Manipal University whose brainchild MUP is. He added, ‘Now that we have achieved this milestone, I am sure the next hundred will come faster. We publish quality books and stay profitable in the market. He also shared a piece of good news with the audience. ‘You will be glad to know that MUP published books also find place on the shelves of Oxford. He also announced that a Lit Fest would be held in Manipal in September and said, ‘That will be an event to look forward to.’

The 100th book was ‘Ayurvedic Inheritance – A reader’s companion’ authored by Professor M S Valiathan, national research professor, who was the chief guest at the function. This is his fifth book on Ayurveda and the release could not have been at a more opportune moment as it was Professor Valiathan’s birthday as well on Tuesday, May 23.

Prior to completing the century of books published by MUP, the books that were released were: Performing Self, Performing Gender Sheetala Bhat; ‘Sumi and the Dance of the Dark Spirits by Toinali Sema and If We Meet Again We Shall Smile by Anusha Chakrabarti. Sheetala and Toinali were present at the release and they spoke about the book.

‘We hit a century with a boundary (four books). Every book is a project of a minimum of 8-10 months from the proposal, copyediting, designing and printing and at the end we receive them as fresh born babies that excite us to produce more to the literary world,’ said Professor Dr Neeta Inamdar, chief editor of MUP.
