Mumbai, 18 Apr 2017: Planned the crime with a friend on WhatsApp; mother survived. Borivali police has arrested an 18-year-old for trying to kill his mother over a monetary dispute.

The accused, along with a friend, had plotted the murder a day before carrying out the crime, and had planned to take away the money kept in the victim’s cupboard.

According to the police, the crime was committed late on Sunday evening. The accused, Dhairya Cheda, 18, told police that his mother did not give him enough pocket money and would nag him about his extravagant behavior. Tired of the constant nagging, he decided to kill her.

During a conversation on WhatsApp with his friend J Nadar, 19, Dhairya planned the murder. He promised to pay Rs 1.5 lakh, which was kept in his mother’s safe, to his friend if he got the job done.

According to the plan Nadar was to go to Dhairya’s house in Borivali (West) when the victim, Meena Cheda, 46, was home; he would kill her and escape with the cash. The duo planned to make it look like the motive was robbery, so that police would not suspect them.

According to the plan, Dhairya stayed home on Sunday and waited for his friend. In the evening, when Nadar came, the friends chatted casually in the hall. As Meena went to the kitchen, Nadar followed her, picked up a knife slashed her throat with it. Meena pushed him away and tried to run, but Nadar caught her and stabbed her in the stomach. She called Dhairya for help but he did not respond and mutely watched the murder.

When Meena screamed, Nadar dropped the knife and ran from the house; Dhairya pretended to catch him. Soon the neighbors came rushing to the house and saw Meena lying unconscious in a pool of blood. They immediately alerted the police and admitted her to a nearby hospital. As her condition grew serious, she was later shifted to Nair Hospital.

The neighbours had already told the cops about Nadar running away, and police arrested him first. During interrogation Nadar told the cops about Dhairya’s involvement in the crime.

Inspector Vasant Pingle of Borivali police station confirmed the incident.

“Both the accused have been arrested for attempt to murder and other sections of IPC. It was revealed during investigations that the son of the victim, who was also present at the scene of the crime, was also involved in the crime. Both have been remanded in custody for three days,” Pingle said.
