Dairy farm exhibition and workshop held in Padubelle

Padubelle 29 March 2011:  As a part of the Silver Jubilee celebration of the Dakshina Kannada Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Limited, Kulshekar, Mangalore, the Udupi Milk Producers’ Cooperative Societies organized Dairy farm exhibition and workshop in the premises of Padubelle Pajey Milk Producers’ Cooperative Society on Monday, 28 March 2011 at 10 am.

 

There was enthusiastic participation in the exhibition and workshop as 310 cows and calves of different categories were registered by 10 am and were lined up in a specially arranged tent for their exhibition. Besides, various posters, medicinal plants and products meant for the cattle ailments were also kept for exhibition and sale.

 

The dairy farm exhibition was inaugurated by Shri Madhava Upadhyaya, the priest from the Pajaka Kshetra on behalf of Shri Shri Vidyavallabh Teertha Swamiji of Shri Kaniyur Mattha, Udupi and Raviraj Hegde, president of D.K. Milk Producers’ Union. The programme was presided over by Mohan Rao, president of Padubelle Pajey Milk Producers’ Society. The guests of honour present for the function included: Chandrashekar Nayak-Executive Director of the D.K. Milk Producers’ Union and directors-Diwakara Shetty, Jagdish Karanth, Mukunda Nayak and Mrs. Janaki Handhe, president of the Belle Grama Panchayat-Mrs. Jacintha Aranha and member of the Udupi Zilla Panchayat from Shirva constituency -Mrs. Ida Gibba D’Souza.

 

D.S. Hegde, Deputy Manager of the D.K. Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union welcomed the guests and Shivappa, Assistant Manager compeered the programme.

 

Following the inaugural programme, workshop on the dairy farming was organized with the help of a panel of experts that included K. Diwakara Shetty, D.S. Hegde, Dr. G.V. Hegde, Dr. Anil Kumar, Dr. Raviraj Udupa, Dr. Ramakrishna, Mahadevappa, Dr. Madhusudhan Kamath and Mrs. Janaki Handhe.

 

 

 

The experts on the panel gave information on various aspects of dairy farming right from the ways to increase the milk production to the fodder and medicines to be used for the health of the cattle. They also explained various government schemes, subsidies and loan facilities available for the dairy farming.

 

K. Diwakara Shetty, from his own experience explained to the audience how ‘Ajola’, a protein substitute for the milk yielding cows can be produced by simple methods. Dr. G.V. Hegde highlighted on the facilities available to dairy farmers from the government. Dr. Madhusudhan Kamath and Dr. Raviraj Udupa explained on the precautions to be taken during and after the parturition (delivery) by the cows and how to take care of the newborn calf and the mother. Mrs. Janaki Handhe narrated her own experience in making dairy farming a profitable profession.

 

A number of inquisitive dairy farmers put forward their questions and doubts which were clarified by the expert panel. The entire workshop and discussions were quite informative and benefitted the dairy farmers.

 

Following the end of discussion and workshop, prizes were distributed by the dignitaries to the owners of the cows and calves in different categories. The high milk yielding cow belonging to Mohan Rao, president of Padubelle Pajey Milk Producers’ Society was adjudged as the ‘champion cow’ among the entire lot. Prizes were also distributed to the owners of other cows and calves. Boniface Mendonca of Padubelle won three prizes-first for his Jersey cow and calf respectively and second prize for his ordinary calf.
