Mumbai: Whoever said passion knows no bounds probably forgot to add that it also knows no age. Proving the ’age-is-just-a-number’ theory right, Mumbai today witnessed 104-year-old Dagdu Bhamare participate in the 14th edition of Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon. If that wasn’t enough, when Mirror asked how the Malegaon resident reached CST, where the run flagged off, he simply said he took the local train, as if it was no big deal.
Bhamare clad in his white dhoti and wearing a traditional cap said, "We travelled from Malegaon to Vikhroli via bus and then took a local train to CST." Bhamare’s son-in-law, who was by his side, admitted with much pride that his father-in-law was indeed a very fit man for his age. "When he had come down to Mumbai last year, he witnessed the marathon for the first time and that inspired him to participate in the event which is the biggest marathon in Asia."
He further added that his father-in-law did not take a single break while walking, "He hasn’t even had a sip of water till now. At this age, after going through so much physical activity, he is still on his feet."
When asked how he could possibly do this, Bhamare said that he walks at least 3-4 km every day and runs 4-5 km twice a week. Moreover, he believes in eating right, "My fitness secret is my diet. I eat neem, tulsi and jagerry every day. I do not drink or smoke." He further explains that he is a vegetarian and his diet includes a mix of different protein and calcium sources in his meals such as milk, fruits etc with low quantities of salt and sugar.
And to all those youngsters inspired by him, his word of advice is that they should study. "I want this generation to study. Stop eating junk and exercise regularly," Bhamare, who once worked as an accountant, said.
