Udupi: Dignitaries laud the contribution of Milagres College during Golden Jubilee celebration

Udupi, 13 Jan 2017: Milagres College, Kallianpur that was founded to provide higher education fifty years ago celebrated its Golden Jubilee on Friday, 13 January 2017 at the college campus. The dignitaries who spoke during the jubilee celebration function spoke eloquently and lauded the contribution of the college in the field of higher education. 

 

In his speech, the guest of  honour, Oscar Fernandes, member of the Rajya Sabha said, “Coastal Districts have been  model to the world in the field of education. Every year thousands of students from different parts of India and even abroad come to Mangalore and Udupi to seek higher education and these two districts have taken a lead in providing quality education to these students. In the field of education we have maintained a higher standard in the world. It is a matter of pride that at a time when Government Colleges were not in existence, Milagres College filled the vacuum in providing higher education and celebrating the Golden Jubilee of its service in the field of education. Many colleges are being elevated to the status of universities and as such  we have to support these steps in the interest of providing quality education to the students.”

 

The chief guest of the function, Pramod Madhwaraj, Guardian Minister of Udupi District in his message said that Milagres College has brought about a revolution in the field of education. The college came into existence with the aim of providing an opportunity to avail higher education to the children of agricultural community. Milagres College has been rendering higher education to its students since the last fifty years. He further said that the Karnataka Government has been supportive of educational institutions and as such it has provided 50 lakhs of rupees to improve the road from Santekatte to Kallianpur and another 17 lakhs of rupees to renovate the connecting road to the college.

Most Rev. Dr. Gerald Isaac Lobo, Bishop of udupi who presided over the Golden Jubilee celebration function in his address said that Milagres College has been not only providing quality higher education to the students, but also has been imbibing values in them to evolve as responsible citizens of the nation. He hoped that along with human values the students would be able to take up leadership in various fields and contribute in building the nation.

 

Reports of Milagres Degree and Junior Colleges were presented by their respective principals, Dr. Gerald Pinto and Ms. Savita Kumari. Ms. Helma Picardo read the report of the Students Welfare Assocition and Prof. Archana Dabde presented the report of the Golden Jubilee celebration.

 

On this occasion founders of the college, former correspondents, principals, retired teachers as well as non-teaching staff and the achievers in the field of education and sports were felicitated.

 

The college journal, “Voice of Milagres” was released by Minister Pramod Madhwaraj. Bishop of Udupi Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Gerald Isaac Lobo released the Golden Jubilee  Souvenir.

 

Dignitaries present during the Golden Jubilee celebration function included: Msgr. Baptist Menezes-Vicar General of Udupi Diocese, Rev. Dr. Lawrence D’Souza-Secretary of Catholic Education Society of Udupi (CESU), Janardhan Thonse-member of Udupi Zilla Panchayat, Dhananjay Kumar-member of Udupi Taluk Panchayat, Neri Cornelio-Vice President of Parish pastoral Council, Dr. Anil Castelino-Campus Director, Melwyn Sequeira and Leslie Lewis of College Development Committee, Alfred Crasto-old student, Rev. Ravichandra Nayak and Vishnu Prasad-Presidents of Parents-Teachers Association, Allan Vinay Lewis-old student, Ms. Rosalia Cardoza-President of Students Welfare Association, Mrs. Joyce D’Souza and  Mrs. Blossom Fernandes.

 

Rev. Fr. Stany Lobo, Correspondent of Milagres educational Institutions welcomed the guests and Mrs. Matilda Lewis proposed the vote of thanks.
