Hospital manager is said to have humiliated him in public for not helping legitimise invalid currency

Bangaluru, 27 Nov 2016: A 27-year-old pharmacist of a private hospital in Mathikere has committed suicide after he was harassed for refusing to co-operate with the hospital’s manager in converting old money to into new currency on commission basis. Frustrated over the non-cooperation, the manager accused the pharmacist of committing theft of Rs 25,000 from the hospital and threatened the victim to return the money. When the victim denied having committed any theft, the manager reportedly humiliated him in front of all other staff on Friday morning. A few hours later, the victim, after informing his brother about the harassment and false accusations, ended his life.

The Yeshwanthapura police who have registered a case have identified the victim as Sandesh Rai, a resident of Mathikere and a native of Mangaluru. He was working as a pharmacist in Subbaiah Hospital on MS Ramaiah Road in Mathikere for the last five years. He committed suicide by hanging at his residence in Mathikere on Friday night. The incident came to light after his brother Dinesh Rai, who is also a pharmacist working in Nayak Hosiptal in Rajajinagar, returned home after work.

“Around 7 pm, my brother called me and explained the harassment. My brother said Chakravarthy, the manager who looks after the hospital’s administrative matters, was exchanging new currencies by taking the demonetised currencies sitting in his cabin at the hospital. The manager asked my brother to help him change the currencies by taking some old notes, to which my brother refused. Sandesh further added that the exchange of old currencies to new currencies was happening in the hospital since the last three days. Frustrated over not listening to him, the manager accused my brother of having stolen Rs 25,000 from the hospital on Friday morning. He was even humiliated in front of everybody,” Dinesh Rai, the victim’s brother told BM.

The phone call went on for almost 15 minutes. The victim told his brother that after the humiliation, he returned home and called the hospital and said he won’t be coming for the day. The victim called his brother from their house in Mathikere which is two roads away from the hospital.

“I advised my brother not to worry and that I would take him to the hospital and discuss the issue with the manager. After my brother cut the call, Chakravarthy called me asking me to him as he had something to talk about. After my work, I went to Subbaiah hospital around 10.30 pm but did not find the manager. I then walked back home and found my house doors locked from inside. There was no response despite repeated knocking. The television was, however, on. After a few minutes, I broke open the window of the room and found my brother hanging from the ceiling fan,” Dinesh said.

After the manager asked the victim to cooperate in exchanging the old currencies, the latter had reportedly told Chakravarthy that he would inform the hospital’s managing director Dr Sunil Subbaiah of the situation. Sandesh had, however, pleaded with the manager not to take the issue to the MD’s desk.

“The victim before committing suicide has left behind a two-page death note in which he has claimed Chakravarthy is responsible for the suicide. He has also stated that the manager should take the responsibility of his family members after his death. The victim’s brother has said the manager deleted the CCTV footage in which the entire humiliation was captured and that of his brother refusing to do his bidding. We have recovered the digital video recorder and are yet to go through the footage,” said an officer part of the investigations.

Sandesh, a bachelor, had been working in Subbaiah Hospital for the last five years. He was staying with his brother Dinesh’s family. Dinesh’s wife had gone to her native place for a delivery. At the time of the suicide, Sandesh was alone at the house. Dinesh took the body to his village in Mangaluru for the final rites after the post mortem at MS Ramaiah hospital on Saturday afternoon.

“The case is being investigated by the Yeshwanthapura police. However, no arrests have been made,” deputy commissioner of police (North) Labhu Ram told BM.

Owner and managing director of Subbaiah Hospital, Dr Sunil Subbaiah when contacted refused to comment and asked BM to call him later. His phone was thereafter switched off.

The Yeshwanthapura police have registered a case of abetment of suicide (IPC 306) against the manager and are further investigating.
