World Alzheimer’s Day observed at Gita Mandir, Moodubelle

Udupi, 21 Sep 2016: World Alzheimer’s Day with the theme of “Remember Me” was observed jointly by the Lions Club of Moodubelle and Department of Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing, Manipal College of Nursing on Wednesday, 21 September 2016 from 2.30 to 4 pm at Gita Mandir, Moodubelle.

 

Ln. Elias D’Souza, President of Lions Club, Moodubelle presided over the programme. Other dignitaries on the dais included: Mrs. Sujata Suvarna, Udupi Taluk Panchayat member, Ln. Devdas Hebbar, Secretary of Lions Club, Moodubelle, Ln. Elias Lobo-Zonal Secretary, Dr. Blessy Prabha Valsaraj-Associate Professor in the  Department of Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing, Manipal College of Nursing and Mrs. Savitha-Assistant Professor.

 

Dr. Blessy Prabha Valsaraj introduced the theme of this year’s World Alzheimer’s Day observation “Remember Me” and stressed upon the importance of the observation of the World Alzheimer’s Day.

 

Ln. Devdas Hebbar, speaking on this occasion said that the disease of forgetfulness is not only restricted to the elderly people but also is being found among the young and the children. In such a scenario it is important that people should be made aware of the early symptoms of the Alzheimer’s disease and remedial measures that can be taken in time.

 

 

The Third Year BSc. Nursing students presented a role play depicting the elderly mother Savitha and the problem that the family faces because of the Alzheimer’s disease eventually  leading them to  seek medical help.

 

Mrs. Savitha spoke on the topic, “Early Identification and Care of Patients with Alzheimer’s Disease”. She used power point presentation to explain various aspects of the Alzheimer’s disease  such as symptoms, nature, and control of the disease.

 

The programme was compered by Miss Gleshma D’Souza.

 

The World Alzheimer’s Day is observed every year on September 21st; to identify the challenges and hardships of Alzheimer’s disease and to shed light on it, showing the suffering patients endure around the world. It also calls for exerting every effort and working unremittingly to enhance the health care and increase support for Alzheimer’s patients and their families.

 

According to a report by Alzheimer’s  Disease International (ADI), there are more than 46 million persons with dementia. And by 2050, the number will reach 131,500.000 persons, meaning that during 2015 there will be 9.9 million new cases of dementia, at a rate of one case per 3 seconds.
