Mangaluru: Dr Indira Hegde, Koti Parava, Betha K Kulal get Karnataka Tulu Academy Hon Award

Mangaluru, 28 Aug 2016: Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy announced honorary awards for the year 2015 here on Saturday August 27.
Dr Indira Hegde chosen for honorary award for her Tulu literary contributions, while Koti Parava chosen for his contributions to Tulu folk art and Betha K Kulal for his contributions to Yakshagana.
Dr Indira Hegde
She was born at Yelattoor in Mangaluru taluk of Dakshina Kannada district. She was married to S R Hegde who supported her to pursue B A, M A and D Lit. She has authored research books on Bunts community and their culture that was published by Karnataka Books Authority and translated to English by S N D Poojary that was published by Kuvempu Bhasha Bharati. She has authored several books on Tulu folklore.
She is settled in Bengaluru and renowned as an entrepreneur, organizer and social activist. She is serving as secretary of Karnataka Women Writers Association.
She is the recipient of several awards, Vasudeva Bhoopalam, Ambarisha, Attimabbe prize, Sahitya Koustuba and many more.
Koti Parava
He is the one amongst 5 boys of Devu Porava and Korapolu couple, residents of Madavu in Puttur taluk. He pursued his family tradition of folk art by discontinuing his early schooling. He became a well known folk artist over the years. He is the recipient of Janapad Loka Prashasti – 2009 by Karnataka Janapad Parishati. He has toured taluks of Sullia, Puttur, Beltangady, Bantwal in Dakshina Kannada district, Madikeri and Virajpet taluks of Kodagu district in performing traditional worship.
Betha K Kulal
He was born to Muttha Moolya and Abbu couple, residents of Mittanadka in Dakshina Kannada district in 1943. He studied up to Class V and took great interest in Yakshagana, the heroic art of Tulunadu. He was trained by veteran Yakshagana artistes Kuria Vittal Shastry and the late Sanna Timmappa. He served in touring Yakshagana troupes of temples in Mulky, Kutyala, Soukoor, Ira, Kollur, Subramanya for 5 decades donning the roles of almost all mythological characters.
He is the recipient of Kannada Sahitya Parishat Prashasti – 2000, 2006 and Karnataka Janapad Loka Prashasti – 2009.
