Bantwal, 10 Aug 2016: She is the final year B E computer science student of an engineering college. She was rejoining college after the summer vacation, when the tragedy struck in the form of bus accident wherein her hand was ruptured. There was doubt whether she would recover from the shock or she would complete her engineering study. However, she proved her strong determination and confidence enabled to achieve the impossible. She is the example of how one can change the destiny even if life gives thrash.

She responded well for all the surgeries in a year following the tragedy. She also mastered writing on her left hand without brooding over the tragedy and appeared for the exams answering all the answers within the time schedule and secured 70 percent results. She is the extraordinary girl none other than Deepa D Halageri, daughter of Dinakar and Pratimadevi Halageri. She is one among 2 daughters of Halageri couple student of Canara Engineering College, Benjanapadav, Bantwal taluk.

Background of tragedy

She was traveling in a bus from Kundapura in Udupi district to her College in Bantwal on February 16, 2015, when a lorry hit the bus. Roopa’s had occupied the window seat whose hand was smashed and blood splashed everywhere as she was seated near the window owing to the collision. All the passengers hurriedly alighted without even glaring at her fate. Meanwhile, a certain Nivedita who was the co-passenger took her to KMC Hospital, Manipal and also called her brother to donate his blood as Roopa’s condition was in critical condition. Nivedita’s humanitarian deed was noteworthy in resurrecting Roopa’s life.

The surgeons at the hospital had second thought of reconstructing her hand, but Roopa responded very well and 5 to 6 surgeries followed in a month after accident. She returned home after a week and followed hospital visits for undergoing 13 surgeries so far. The efforts of Dr Anil Bhat, surgeon of KMC Hospital and his colleagues are paying off in restoring her hand.  Her family had spent over Rs 4 lac so far. It’s significant that the governing council of Canara Engineering College, professors and teachers contributed Rs 2 lac in this regard.

Turning point

There were just 2 to 3 monthly left for her to complete her graduation, but it’s owing to the tragedy she had to forgo another year. She did not sit idle at home, instead tried to do her homework with her left hand with the constant support of her mother. Her self confidence helped her in her fast recovery and returned to classes after a year.

She was worried about appearing for her exams, but completed writing in the answer sheet of all the questions with her left hand within timeline.  She was curious of her results and happy to pass with distinction. She also posed challenge to recruiters who were thinking twice with job offers. She said to them that she can work and if you offer me job I will do. The recruiters felt strange and now she is employed with EMC Square in Bengaluru out of 2 job offers.

I am proud that I have overcome the tragedy with strong grit and determination, says Roopa. Roopa’s sister Deepa who is employed in a dental college at Mangaluru said, ‘Our contribution is just 10 percent. Its our mother’s sacrifices and Roopa’s rare will power that changed the miserable situation to glory,’ said Deepa.

If I had occupied that seat

Nivedita, an employee of Infosys in Mangaluru who was a co-passenger and Samaritan had helped Roopa to get treatment at KMC Hospital, Manipal was always occupying the seat that was occupied by Roopa on that ill fated day. Nivedita was seated next to Roopa when the truck collided with the bus that they were travelling together. I am happy that Roopa had overcome the tragedy by her strong will and grit in completing her studies and getting a good job,’ said Nivedita.
