Mangaluru: Street vendors union protest against civic body over non-issuance of ID cards

Mangaluru, 29 Jul 2016: The city street vendors union led by CITU staged protest in front of municipal office, here on Thursday July 28, to urge the civic body in order to renew the identity cards to 208 vendors and issue rest of identity cards to 350 vendors, besides condemning unnecessary raids by ferrying their wares.
Over 600 street vendors held a protest rally from PVS Junction till the municipal building, hurling slogans.
Addressing the protesters, CITU state vice president Vasant Achary said that despite an Act was passed for the benefit of street vendors in parliament, both the union and state governments are least interested in implementing. Both the governments that are expected to work on the welfare of laborers are in fact promoting corporate companies. The direct foreign funding in retail sector is likely to take away the livelihood of crore of people engaged in retail trade, said Achary. He called on the vendors to wage struggle against anti-people policy of governments.
CITU district general secretary Sunil Kumar Bajal, CITU town general secretary Yogish Jappinamogaru, CITU district president J Balakrishna Shetty, corporator Dayanand Shetty, Vasudev Ucchil, Dalit rights Committee president Lingappa Nantoor, CITU district leaders Jayanti Shetty, Bharati Bolar and others also addressed the protesters.
DK district street vendors union leaders Mohammed Mustafa, Santosh Kumar R S, Atavulla, Hitesh Poojary, Sikandar, Mary D’Souza, Hassan, Helen, Adam, Annayya Kulal, Ravi Poojary, Zakir Hussein, Muzafar, Cherion and others led the protest.
