Bantwal: Sugram Sangh sets example in water conservation with target to dig 1 lac pits

Bantwal, 24 Jul 2016: No water in taps...wells are dried up...you need not worry anymore, because the members of Sugram – gram panchayat elected women representatives Association has embarked on Jal Saksharat (water conservation campaign) in Bantwal taluk.
The Association has taken a bold step to recharge aquifers for aforestation and save water sources for the future generations, by embarking on the Jal Saksharat campaign in the limits of 10 gram panchayat across Bantwal taluk.
What is Jal Saksharat..?
The underground water resources are gradually drying every year. The environmental women activists have come forward to create mass awareness on the excessive use of water especially by digging borewells in villages, deforestation to develop plantations to earn quick bucks all has serious consequences on Mother Nature. The campaign was conceived during the meeting of Bantwal taluk Sugrama Association held at Navachetana living studies training Centre at Mudipu, near here. The discussions on Jal Saksharat campaign, solar campaign, NAREGA, enrolling school dropout/new students, and other issues.
Water harvesting pits
At the first stage of Jal Saksharat Abhiyan, the members of Sugrama Sangh will dig 2 to 20 water harvesting pits in their households depending on the landholding and plant at least 2 to 5 saplings in each household. They would approach local donors in digging water harvesting pits in children’s nurseries, schools and households in the neighbourhood. They would take the direction of Jana Shikshana Trust chairman Sheena Shetty and Krishna Moolya to implement their campaign in villages that come under the limits of Naringana, Balepuni, Amtady, Alike, Vittal Padnoor, Kolnad, Salettoor, Manchi, Netla Mudnoor and Pervai gram panchayats.
Target to dig 1 lac pits..!
It has a target of digging 10,000 water harvesting pits in the limits of each gram panchayat to conserve rain water. The campaign has already begun in the limits of Naringana gram panchayat by digging over 500 such pits. They aspire to do the same in other villages. The women representatives indeed deserve kudos for their noble deed.
Sugram Sangh president Dakshayini, office bearers Chetana, Sumana, Sunanda, Baby, Revati, Leelavati, Prameela, Kamala, Nalinakshi, Sudha Shetty, Harinakshi, Jayanti, Jyoti and others are actively involved in the campaign in their respective villages.
There is the urgency to implement Jal Saksharat Abhiyan in every village. Sugram – women representatives Association has voluntarily come forward to carry out the noble deed thereby setting an example in Karnataka.
