Mangaluru: High School science teachers attend workshop to train students on Olympiad

Mangaluru, 22 Jul 2016: At the joint aegis of Alma Mater of NITK English Medium School – Suratkal, Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education – Mumbai and Pilikula Regional Science Centre – Mangaluru, in collaboration with public instructions department, 3-day workshop on lab-based activities for science teachers of selected high schools of Dakshina Kannada district was held at Pilikula, here from Tuesday July 19 to Thursday July 21.
Dr P K Joshi, Pradeep Dasgupta, Sujata and Shuveccha from Mumbai-based Tata Institute of Fundamental Research run by Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education were the resource persons.
Dr Joshi inaugurated the 3-day training programme and explained about junior science Olympiad. He said, ‘Indian students excelled in World Olympiad by proper training. They lacked the basic principles before undertaking experiments. When they were given necessary training, it enabled them to get better results. About 40,000 students from across country try to qualify every year. However, its only 30 students reach the finals and undergo training at their Centre. Dakshina Kannada district has high literacy level and has the potential for many Olympiad winners in the coming days, if the students and their teacher take keen interest in this regard,’ said Dr Joshi.
The public instructions science superintendent, NITK English Medium School alma mater president Christopher Misquit, Pilikula Science Centre director Dr K V Rao was present.
Dr Rao welcomed the gathering. NITK English Medium School principal Surekha Bhat proposed vote of thanks.
