Mangaluru: Two-Day FDP on Automation and Robotics held at SJEC - Vamanjoor

Mangaluru, 20 Jul 2016: A two-day faculty development program (FDP) on Automation and Robotics was organized by the department of mechanical engineering at St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Vamanjoor, here from July 15 to July 16.

 

The FDP was inaugurated by D N Vasuki, CEO of 4i Projects – Bengaluru here on July 15 at 9:00am.

 

The ceremony was presided by Fr Joseph Lobo, director – SJEC. Dr Prakash Pinto, principal (in-charge) - SJEC and Dr Rio D’Souza, vice principal - SJEC, graced the occasion as guests of honor.

Mohan Raj from MTAB – Chennai, Professor Dr Muralidhara from NMAMIT – Nitte, Abhinav Sood from FANUC India Private Limited, Milind Taware from Bosch Rexroth, Himanshu Kumar from Indwell Automation and Training – Pune, along with D N Vasuki, were the resource persons.

 

The FDP was attended by 40 delegates from various Engineering Colleges in the region. Dr Sudheer M, Professor and head of mechanical engineering, was the organizing secretary of the FDP. Binu KG, Santhosh H, and Chaithra V, faculty in the department of mechanical engineering, were the co-ordinators.

 

D N Vasuki in his session spoke about the evolution of industrial automation across the globe. The reasons for India’s slow growth in the field, mainly the government policies, high capital investment and high ROI periods were discussed. Vasuki also spoke about the current challenges in automation industry and the way forward.

 

Mohan Raj from MTAB – Chennai introduced to the audience the basics of robotics and dwelled on the various robot programming techniques (online and offline mode). He also demonstrated the programming details of a robot using Aristo SIM and workspace software.

 

Dr Muralidhara’s topic of presentation was Kinematics of Robots. Dr Muralidhara explained the evaluation of displacement matrix to locate the position of an end affecter of a robot with respect to its base. He also showcased the use of LABVIEW for mechanical engineering projects with various case studies.

 

Abhinav Sood from FANUC India showcased to the audience the state-of-the-art robots being manufactured at FANUC for a variety of applications across the globe. Excellent videos of different categories of Robots and their working were demonstrated.

 

Milind Taware from Bosch Rexroth introduced the application of PLCs in automation industries. The basic components of PLC systems and the wiring methods were touched upon.

 

Himanshu Kumar from Indwell Automation and Training – Pune conducted a day-long session on PLC programming. The morning session focused on development of programs for various examples starting from a simple lamp-on application to traffic signal control and timer circuits using ladder programming techniques. The afternoon session was an hands-on session on PLC programming using Codesys software.
