Mumbai, 20 May 2016: With the high temperature touching more than 30 degrees Celsius, traffic Police personnel are sweating it out in the city, standing long hours on the road exposed to the scorching heat, dust, vehicle fumes and heavy traffic. However, bringing cheers to them, Wockhardt Hospital, Mumbai Central in association with Mumbai Traffic police has decided to provide ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution) sachets that contain rehydration salts and sugars. Wockhardt Hospital, Mumbai Central has distributed 20,000 ORS sachets to Traffic personnel to avoid dehydration; there are almost 3,000 traffic personnel from 32 police stations in Mumbai.

A woman traffic constable on duty at Dadar appreciated the initiative taken by Wockhardt Hospital, Mumbai Central saying, ‘Our job requires us to stand long hours in the hot sun every single day. Weakness is a common complaint and during traffic peak hours we find it very difficult to take a break even to drink water.’

‘Many times they have to continuously stand for more than 4-5 hours in the middle of the road to manage the traffic. This can lead to severe stress. Not forgetting the traffic constables who also suffer from sunstroke and other related illnesses. Dehydration may lead to parched throat, dry eyes and mouth, drowsiness, less or no urination, confusion, and in severe cases, fainting. The sugars and salts in the sachets help the water to be absorbed from the intestines and restore moisture balance in the body,’ added Dr Behram Pardiwala, consultant Physician, at Wockhardt Hospital, Mumbai Central.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Milind Bharambe said, ‘Our traffic policemen are at work on the road to ensure that there is smooth flow of traffic. Due to excessive heat they suffer from weakness or heat stroke especially during summer season. This initiative will help us to keep them from Dehydration during summer.’
