IMD forecasts above normal monsoon; Revenue chief secretary instructs for preparedness

Mangaluru, 30 April 2016: At the backdrop of Indian Metrology Department (IMD) forecasted above normal monsoon this year, the chief revenue secretary (disaster management) Dr Rajkumar Khatri instructed the district administration of coastal Karnataka to take early precautionary measures.
Addressing the Deputy Commissioners of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttar Kannada districts at Deputy Commissioner’s office, here on Saturday April 30, Dr Khatri urged the district administrations to take early precautionary measures as per the forecast of Indian Metrology department that there would be above normal monsoon this year and coastal towns will get heavy rains.
All taluks should have emergency squads with control rooms that should operate 24 hours of the day with all facilities, advised Dr Khatri.
Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim said that active plans will be made to face monsoon related disasters. At present, the district faces scarcity of drinking water that was curbed to some extent to ban drawing water from lifeline Netravati River by private purposes and irrigation.
Udupi Deputy Commissioner Dr Vishal said that the drinking water woes are acute in rural villages than cities and towns in district. The district administration has focused on this issue.
Karnataka disaster management Centre director Dr G S Srinivas Reddy, Dakshina Kannada ZP chief executive officer P I Vidya, ADC Kumar, Uttar Kannada district offier Sadashiv Prabhu, Mangaluru municipal commissioner Dr Gopalakrishna, department officials, officers of NMPT and coastguard were present.
