Mangaluru: Science evolved from profession to passion globally- Dr K. Muniyappa

Mangaluru, 04 Feb 2016: The department of chemistry of PG and UG studies of St Aloysius College here jointly organized 2-day national level seminar on ‘Optical Methods of Chemical Analysis’ at Eric Mathias hall, here on Thursday February 4 and Friday February 5.

 

The chief guest for the occasion was Dr K. Muniyappa, Professor and Chairman of DBTRA programme, and department of Bio Chemistry, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru.

 

Dr Muniyappa, in his keynote address, said, ‘Science is changing, concepts are refined, but they remain the same, that is why they are called concepts.’ He also said that in a continuing process it is required that we make progress on a day to day basis. He encouraged the students to try and access the information, opportunities and expertise available as much as possible as the scope is enormous.

 

 

Fr Swebert D’Silva SJ, principal of St Aloysius College, in his presidential address emboldened the students to develop the characteristic of discipline by giving the example of Arabian Horses. He urged the students to imbibe in themselves the spirit of discipline to become successful as future doesn’t come automatically but with perseverance. He also said that discipline makes good scientists and enables them to reach great heights.

 

The seminar was inaugurated by the symbolic lighting of the lamp by K Muniyappa, Rev Fr. Swebert D’Silva SJ, Professor John Sherra, vice principal of Science stream, Rachel Natasha Mary, organizing secretary of the seminar, Dr Richard Gonzalves, head of the department of PG studies in chemistry, Rajgopal Bhat, head of the department of UG Department of chemistry.

 

Dr A M Narahari, Registrar of the College; Fr Dr Praveen Martis SJ, director of LCRI and DDU Kaushal Kendra; Fr Francis D’Almeida, vice principal of PG department; Dr Ronald Nazareth, director of the Star College Scheme were also present for the occasion.

 

The gathering was welcomed by Rajgopal Bhat and the vote of thanks was proposed by Rachel Natasha Mary.

 

The resource persons for the seminar were Dr M S Balakrishna, department of inorganic chemistry, IIT Mumbai – Interpreted Molecular Spectroscopy; Dr Manjunath Pattabhi, head of department of material science, Mangalore University – Optical Properties of Nano particles; Dr Ramakrishna Damle, chairman, department of physics, Bangalore University – Molecular Spectroscopy and its applications; Dr S Sankararaman, Professor, department of chemistry, IIT Chennai – Dynamic Processes by NMR spectroscopy and Mass spectrometry: Application and structure elucidation.

 

About the seminar

Every year a National seminar is organized by the department of Chemistry to brush up the latest advances in research. The theme of this year’s Seminar in in sync with the international year of light.

 

The department of chemistry is one of the oldest departments of the College and offers UG and PG courses in chemistry. PG courses include M Sc in Analytical Chemistry and M Sc in General Chemistry. The department has 21 well qualified staff members including research guides. The department of chemistry has also been recognized as the center for research under Tumkur University.
