After ban on Jallikattu, AWBI urges Karnataka govt to ban Kambala
Bengaluru, 16 Jan 2016: After the Apex Court issued an order on banning Jallikattu, the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) has now addressed a letter to the Karnataka government requesting it to not allow the Kambala races in the state citing that the judgment banned Jallikattu as well as similar races that used animals.
Kambala is a buffalo race held in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. The letter sent to the government on Thursday requested that immediate steps be taken to stop the races that were planned.
The Board noted that the Supreme Court had initially put a stay on the notification of Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change that permitted the use of bulls in Jallikattu, bullock cart races and similar other events; however, it was stayed through an order dated January 12, 2016 and the court refused to revoke the stay through an order issued on January 13, 2016.
If Kambala was allowed, the state government might face contempt of court which will also add to violating orders of the Supreme Court, the AWBI opined.
The AWBI has requested the government to take immediate action in compliance with the SC’s order.
Apart from the government, the letters were also sent to the state Police Chief, officials of the Department of Animal Husbandry, Superintendents of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts and other officials.
