Helmets mandatory for pillion riders from Jan 12
Bengaluru, 09 Jan 2016: The State government has finally decided on making helmets compulsory for pillion riders throughout the state; hence, from January 12, all pillion riders, irrespective of the age would have to wear helmets.
Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy spoke regarding the decision on Friday. He said, “The mandatory helmet for pillion riders was enforced after instructions from the Supreme Court and the Central Road Safety panel’s recommendations.”
He further said that two-wheeler accidents in the state had amounted to nearly 30% of road accidents in the country and the rule has been enforced keeping in mind the safety of the public.”
He also said that some time will be given for riders to buy helmets as there may be shortage due to the huge amount required.
Speaking regarding pillion riders who violate the rule, Reddy said that a fine of Rs 100 would be imposed and a fine of Rs 200 and Rs 300 would be imposed for violating the rule for a second and third time; however, the fourth time, no fine would be imposed, instead the Driving License would be suspended.
