- Media Release
Auckland/New Zealand, 13 Oct 2015: Agnelo Mascarenhas to present tenth Konkani play, Ekuch Rogoth (One blood) at Freemans Bay Community Hall, Freemans Bay, here on Saturday October 17 at 7.00pm.
Angnelo was born in a little village in Goa, called Majorda, Agnelo hails from a musical family. Agnelo’s grandfather (Egipcio Mascarenahs) was a Navy band master in Kochi, Kerala. Agnelo’s late father Cyril Mascarenhas was a guitarist/Benjo/violin Player who taught many youngsters. He also played Benjo for late theatre artiste from Goa – Rosario Rodrigues.
Agnelo’s mother Marca Mascarenhas is the cousin of the Anthony Gonsalves. Yes, the very same Anthony Gonsalves, from the 1977 Bollywood blockbuster, ‘Amar, Akbar, Anthony,’ after whom the song was named by Pyarelal as a tribute to his violin teacher, Anthony Gonsalves.
Inspired by his family background to continue in their footsteps, Agnelo’s passion grew more towards acting and his desire to be a magician. Agnelo’s acting career began at the age of seven in Goa. As he grew in knowledge and experience, he began to write and act in many ‘One Act’ plays in Goa during the Carnival season. He wrote his first main script – ‘Burguem Konachem,’ in 1986. He was also supported by his maternal uncle, late M Boyer.
Agnelo relocated from Goa to Muscat (Sultanate of Oman) in 1986 and soon began to miss the Konkani theatre. Realising the opportunity to keep the Konkani culture alive, Agnelo brought together a group of people with similar interest and rolled out the drama, ‘Burguem Konachem,’ for the first time in Muscat to an excited and packed audience. Agnelo’s pioneering efforts will always be cherished by the Konkani community in Muscat. From then on, Goan artistes presented regular dramas in association with Agnelo as a lead actor.
In 2001, Agnelo and his family relocated to New Zealand for a better life. Agnelo missed his culture and unable to contain himself, Agnelo reinvented the wheel in New Zealand with a strong desire to keep the Konkani culture and hertiage alive staying connected to its roots.
Agnelo strongly supports the thought that the Konkani language though diverse in dialect yet must be united under one banner as ‘Amchi Konkani.’
While getting settled in New Zealand, he worked hard to make his dream come true by presenting the Konkani drama within his friends circle here in New Zealand and presented the following different dramas in New Zealand.
The dramas presented by Agnelo are: Kazarachi Sobhai – with Mic Max – Mangaloreans, Panch Bottam – Agnelo, Sovnsarant Astana Diatt- with Menino De Bhandar, Khudi Bhoin, Florian Vaz Poilo Martir – with Menino de Bhandar/Rico Rod/Betty Naz, Kon zaitt Tho and Sasumaichem Kortub.
