Mumbai: Over 200 students of VES Institute of Tech clean up Chembur Rly Station

Mumbai, 09 Oct 2015: Around 200 engineering students joined cleanup campaign initiative with the help of BMC-M ward and Chembur Railway officials.

 

Students also painted the walls and cleaned the entire rail premises along with nearby spots.

 

Dreaming a City bereft of garbage strewn across, students of the VES Institute of Technology on Thursday October 8, embarked on a cleanliness mission by starting a drive from busy Chembur railway station and surrounding premises.

 

 

More than 200 engineering students of Vivekanand Education Society’s Institute of Technology (VESIT) joined the endeavor, held in collaboration with the railway administration and the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM).

 

The students also took a pledge to devote time on a regular basis to clean their surroundings. The message for a garbage-free Mumbai permeated the atmosphere with placards and posters emphasizing on the urgency to rid the city of solid waste and filth.

 

Elaborating the initiatives taken by the students, VESIT principal Dr Jayalakshmi Nair said, ‘The Institute has always been in the forefront of initiating social causes in the larger interests of society. We believe in the adage that every noble task starts from self and cleanliness of public places has always been close to our hearts.’

 

Dr Vijaylakshmi M, vice-principal who led the students in the drive, said more such cleanliness drives would be carried out in future in other places too. ‘I believe that every concerned person should take the initiative of cleaning his surroundings and ensure a clean and healthy surroundings for his fellow men,’ said De Vijayalaxmi.

 

‘Garbage is a paramount problem which has rattled every concerned citizen and the only way to tackle it is to take the initiative in one’s hand and set forth to clean the city ourselves,’ said Pranit Kotgire, 2nd year Instrumentation student.

 

Emphasizing on the need for the student community to take increasing participation in such social drives, Vinayak Sharma, 2nd year Computer student said, ‘The students represent the vibrant force which is driving the vision that is India. If every student in this country incorporates the vision of a clean and disease-free environment, every station, every public place will become spic and span with no traces of garbage and filth. The drive to clean Chembur station is just a small reiteration on our part that we are committed to cleaning our surroundings and spread the message that cleanliness is godliness.’

 

Lauding the efforts of the students, Vijay Patil, assistant engineer (solid waste management department), MCGM–M ward said, ‘I am extremely proud to see that the students of VES Institute of Technology have undertaken this noble deed. We have always backed such student-backed initiatives and see a welcome change in the attitude of citizens towards pressing social issues like garbage, especially from the student community. The BMC is committed to ensuring a clean and green Mumbai and we will always extend our full-fledged cooperation to the students in undertaking such tasks of social importance.’
