Mangaluru: Prof P C Mahalonobis, India’s legendary Statistician remembered

Mangaluru, 01 Sep 2015: The one-hundred-twenty-second birth anniversary of statistician Professor P C Mahalonobis was celebrated as Statistical Day, as per the direction of government at district statistical office, here on Monday August 31.
Mangaluru Urban Development Authority chairman Mohammed Nazeer after inaugurating the programme, lauded the lifetime contributions of Professor P C Mahalonobis to statistics sphere in our country. The statistical data plays key role in devising development projects.
The district viral diseases control officer Dr Arun Kumar was the resource person briefed about the contributions of Professor Mahalonobis to statistics and data on social happiness index.
National Model Survey office chief P Anand advised to organize taluk level Statistical Day that would educate the masses on the significance of statistics.
The district statistical officer Pradeep D’Souza in his presidential address said that it would be a tribute to Professor Mahalonobis by pooling statistical data that is reliable. He also advised to work on different works of statisticians in India and overseas.
Rahul G Das, III B Sc student of SDM College Ujire bagged the first prizes in the essay competition; Deepika, III B Sc student of Besant PU College, here bagged the second prize and Rohan Pai, III B Sc student of St Aloysius College, here bagged the third prize.
DK zilla panchayat project estimation and valuation officer Sandhya K S presented the prizes to the winners on the occasion.
