- Media Release

Mangaluru, 27 June 2015: On 12th June 2015, Minister for Higher Education and Tourism Mr R V Deshapande inaugurated the Konkani Study Chair in Mangalore University at a function held in University College, Hampankatta in the city. The study chair could become a reality only because the state government had granted Rs. 2 crores in the annual budget 2014-15. However, ever since the study chair has been inaugurated Roy Castelino, who is also the President of Konkani Sahithya Academy, has been claiming himself as the founder of this study chair through false propaganda. There have been many advertisements and special supplements in Kannada and Konkani newspapers and periodicals about this false campaign carried out by him. Even the social media is abuzz with lies and half truths.

It is highly objectionable for any individual to indulge in spreading false information and project himself as the founder of the Konkani Study Chair set up by an elected government from the tax payer’s money.

It is also unfortunate to note that great injustice has been done to eminent Konkani writers and poets  by not including them in the committee of the study chair. When this was pointed out by one of the senior Konkani poets in the social media a co-opted member of Konkani Sahithya Academy Lawrence D Souza even had the audacity to say “you set up a separate Study Centre and appoint only poets and writers”. Members of Konkani Writers and Artistes’ Association condemn this highhanded and haughty behaviour of both Roy Castelino and Lawrence D Souza.

The Association members submitted a copy of the memorandum to Vice Chancellor of Mangalore University Prof Byrappa K, addressed to the Chancellor of University and Governor of Karnataka Vajubai Rudabai Wala and urged  him to dismiss of Roy Castelino from the post of President of Konkani Sahithya Academy.

The copy of the memorandum was handed over to Vice Chancellor by Florine Roche and Henry Mendonca on behalf of the association. Prof Byrappa who listened to the issues raised by these members, promised to initiate necessary action in this regard.
