Konkani study chair at M’lore University to be inaugurated on June 12
Mangaluru, 09 Jun 2015: The highly anticipated Konkani study chair at Mangalore University will be inaugurated on June 12 by state Minister for Higher Education and Tourism RV Deshpande, President of Konkani Sahitya Academy Roy Castelino said.
The state government has sanctioned Rs 2 crore for the project, he informed.
The objectives of the chair are to help in the development of Konkani language and study and research of Konkani linguistic science, to undertake documentation and study of Konkani people, folk, art, literature and culture, to organize Konkani conventions at the regional, national and international levels, to organize workshops for Konkani littérateurs, poets and writers, to create awareness on Konkani language among the students, to develop educational tools like syllabus, books and methods to teach Konkani language from nursery to post graduation.
It also intends to organize doctoral, post doctoral and fellowship programmes at the university level and to organize online degree including correspondence and postal education programmes.
In a bid to encourage more students to take up Konkani as the third language from Class VI, the academy has come out with a new concept of appointing ambassadors.
In this regard, Prof. Ullas Kamath, Prof. G Venkateshwara Pai and Raghavendra Rao have been chosen as the district pramukhs for Karwar, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada respectively. They are expected to strategically organize and introduce new modules to promote Konkani, he said.
