M’Belle/Karkala: Fr. Joswey Fernandes takes charge as Parish Priest of Christ the King Church

Udupi, 20 May 2015: Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes who had served as the Parish Priest of St. Lawrence Church, Moodubelle for the last seven years took charge of Christ the King Church, Karkala Town parish from the outgoing parish priest Rev. Fr. John Barboza on Wednesday, 20 May 2015 at 4 pm in the presence of Rev. Fr. Stany Tauro, Dean of Shirva Varado as the representative of the Bishop of Udupi.

 

Prior to this, Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes was given a warm send off by the present parish priest of Moodubelle, Rev. Fr. Clement Mascarenhas and parishioners who assembled in the church for a brief prayer service led by Rev. Fr. Clement Mascarenhas. In his introductory remarks, Rev. Fr. Clement Mascarenhas recalled the dedicated service of  Fr. Joswey in Moodubelle parish for the last seven years and said that though he will be going to take charge of Christ the Church at Karkala Town as the parish priest he would be fondly remembered by the Moodubelle parishioners and wished him well in his new assignment.

 

Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes thanked the parishioners of Moodubelle for their affection and cooperation during the last seven years and urged them to maintain the unity and cohesiveness of the parish community. Further he said that as the parish priest he had to perform his duties as per the rules and guidelines which he did. During the seven years of his service in Moodubelle he learnt certain lessons which would help him while serving as the parish priest of Christ the King Church in Karkala Town. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Around 125 parishioners came to see off Fr. Joswey. Many of them travelling in a private bus, one school bus and a number of private cars accompanied Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes to Christ the King Church, Karkala where Rev. Fr. John Barboza, parish priest, Rev. Fr. Stany Tauro, representative of the Bishop and a number of parishioners were present at the main entrance of the church to receive the new parish priest.

 

On reaching the main entrance, Rev. Fr. John Barboza warmly welcomed Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes by offering him jasmine garland. In the church after a brief prayer service,  the formal ceremony of handing over and taking charge as the parish priest followed as per the laid down rules. Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes formally took charge of Christ the King Church by accepting the Stoll, Bible, registers containing the names of the parishioners, church property documents and account books and the keys of the Tabernacle.

 

The members of the Parish Pastoral Council assembled in front of the main altar with candles which were lighted by Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes from a candle which in turn he had lighted from the Pascal Candle.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Following the formal taking and handing over the charge of the parish, a short stage programme was arranged.  Vice President of the Parish Pastoral Council, Mrs. Elsie D’Souza welcomed the gathering, Rev. Fr. John Barboza in his introductory remarks welcomed Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes, the other priests and the parishioners from Moodubelle  who had accompanied Fr. Joswey  who had come to see off Fr. Joswey and Karkala parishioners who had gathered to welcome him.

 

In his message, Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes   once again expressed his gratitude to the parishioners of Moodubelle and assured his dedicated and selfless service to the parishioners of Christ the King Church.

 

Rev. Fr. Stany Tauro in his address pointed out that both Fr. John and Fr. Joswey were classmates while undergoing seminary training and good friends. He further said that the parishioners of Karkala have been fortunate to get the service of good parish priests and wished both of them well.

 

Rev. Fr. Clement Mascarenhas, Rev. Fr. Lawrence D’Souza-presently Director of Catholic Education Society, Udupi (CESU), Rev. Fr. Paul Sequeira-Principal of St. Lawrence PU College, Moodubelle,  Rev. Fr. P. Raj-former Principal of St. Lawrence English Medium High School, Moodubelle, Rev. Fr. Reginald Pinto-Director of Sampada, Udupi Diocese, Rev. Fr. Edwin D’Souza-Director of Youth Commission, Udupi Diocese, Rev. Fr. Valerian D’Silva (OFM Cap), Rev. Fr. Frolic Fernandes (OFM Cap), Sr. Irene Viegas-Superior of Loreto Convent, Br. Roy Lobo, Alphonse K. Alva-Vice President of Parish pastoral Council,  Mrs. Latha D’Mello-Secretary  along with other parishioners accompanied Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes.

 

Two of Fr. Joswey’s brothers-Francis and Noel Fernandes, sister-in-law Elizabeth Fernandes and niece Noshel Fernandes also accompanied him to Karkala from Moodubelle.

 

Earlier, on 19 May 2015, the newly appointed parish priest  to Moodubelle, Rev. Fr. Clement Mascarenhas was warmly welcomed by Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes. The taking and handing over the charge was conducted by Rev. Dr. Baptist Menezes as the representative of the Bishop of Udupi.

 

Rev. Fr. Clement Mascarenhas was accompanied by his priest brothers Rev. Fr. Fred Mascarenhas, Dean of Udupi Deanery and parish priest of Mother of Sorrows Church, Udupi and Rev. Fr. Eugene Mascarenhas from Lucknow. Other priest who accompanied Fr. Clement included Rev. Fr. Denis D’Sa-PRO of Udupi Diocese and Rev. Fr. Valerian  Mendonca-Chancellor of Udupi Diocese.
