Bantwal: Woman passenger dies; 3 critical in ghastly road mishap at Soorikumer, NH 75

Bantwal, 09 May 2015: A woman passenger died instantly and 3 persons were critically injured, when a sand-laden truck head-on collided with a Maruti Alto car at Soorikumer, on Mangaluru – Bengaluru NH 75, here on Friday May 8 evening.

 

The deceased has been identified as eighty-four-year-old Saraswati, a resident of Chennai. The car driver thirty-two-year-old Ramachandra, fifty-two-year-old Srinivas and forty-year-old Kanchana were critically injured.

 

The family hailing from Chennai arrived to attend a programme in their relative’s home in Puttur, a few days ago. They were on their way to Mangaluru Railway Station for their return journey to Chennai, when sand-laden truck collided their Maruti Alto car in a steep curve at Soorikumer on NH 75.

As a result the car was fully damaged. Saraswati who was sitting in a rear seat died on the spot. The car driver Ramachandra was unconscious. Kanchana and Srinivas suffered critical injuries. They were taken to private hospital in Mangaluru by state-run ambulance service 108.  

 

The sand-laden truck exceeding its bearing capacity was plying from Mangaluru to Mysore, collided with Maruti Alto car that was tossed 50 meters away in the gutter. The truck also hit the barrier wall when its front wheel gone away. The truck driver fled from the spot, when the locals arrived at the spot.

 

Bantwal circle inspector Belliyappa, Vittal sub-inspector Prakash Devadiga arrived at the spot and registered a case in this regard.

 

The vehicles were cleared from the spot using cranes and earthmovers. The police personnel of Vittal restored the traffic for normalcy.

 

Sand-laden trucks are nightmare on roads

The over speeding and marauding truck drivers are competing with each other threatening the lives of other motorists. A sand-laden truck was collided with empty truck at Vogga near here a few days ago. The public cry is that the traffic cops ought to curb this menace before it takes several lives on highway.

 

Family on return journey to Chennai…

The family hailing from Puttur and settled in Chennai were on visit to Shevire, Nehru Nagar, Puttur, near here. The family settled in Chennai since several years ago. They have arrived in Puttur to attend a programme and were travelling to Mangaluru from Puttur, in order to board Chennai express train that departs at 4.00pm, when the tragedy occurred.
