Udupi, 02 May 2015: Most Rev. Dr. Albert D’Souza, Archbishop of Agra ordained Deacon Frolic Fernandes as a priest in the Capuchin Order on Saturday, 2 May 2015 at St. Lawrence Church, Moodubelle. Incidentally, both Archbishop Albert D’Souza and Deacon Frolic Fernandes belong to Moodubelle and the Archbishop happens to be the grand uncle of Deacon Frolic Fernandes.

The ordination mass began with the grand procession of  priests, mostly belonging to the Capuchin Order along with Deacon Frolic Fernandes, his parents  Felix and Irene Fernandes and Archbishop Albert D’Souza.

After the reading of the Gospel by Deacon Frolic Fernandes, the Provincial of Holy Trinity Karnataka Province, Rev. Fr. Joseph Dolphy Paes (OFM Cap) presented the candidature of Deacon Frolic Fernandes for priesthood to the Archbishop.

Rev. Fr. Chetan Lobo (OFM Cap), Editor of the Udupi Diocesan journal, “Uzvaad” in his homily highlighted the role of a priest in the church. He said that a priest is the one who brings the message of God to the faithful and carries their prayers to God. Quoting from Pope Francis, Fr. Chetan continued that the life of a priest rests on seven pillars that include deep rootedness with Christ; being one with the faithful; serving the poor weak and marginalized in the society; being a symbol of simplicity and humility; etc.

The ordination ceremony followed the homily during which the Litany of the Saints was sung as Deacon Frolic Fernandes prostrated in front of the altar. Archbishop then laid his hands on the head of Deacon Frolic and prayed for God’s grace. This was followed by other priests.  Later, his uncle Rev. Fr. Paul Fernandes S.J. helped Deacon Frolic to wear the priestly vestments. Thereafter, Archbishop Albert D’Souza consecrated the hands of Deacon Frolic Fernandes with holy oil and was handed over the chalice and host symbolizing the responsibility of priesthood. With this ritual, Deacon Frolic Fernandes became Fr. Frolic Fernandes (OFM Cap). The Archbishop then embraced newly ordained Fr. Frolic Fernandes and other priests too followed kissing the newly consecrated hands of Fr. Frolic and embracing him. Later, Fr. Frolic Fernandes joined Archbishop Albert D’Souza in offering the Holy Eucharist.

The entire ordination mass and priestly consecration ceremony was anchored by Rev. Fr. Navin Santosh D’Souza (OFM Cap).
