Udupi, 24 Apr 2015: Tense situation prevailed at a private hospital here on Friday, April 24, after relatives and locals blamed the medical care as reason for the death of a woman after delivery.

The deceased is Varsha (23), wife of Devadas, a resident of Subhashnagar.

According to sources, Varsha was admitted to the hospital for delivery on April 17. She conceived a baby girl on April 18 through normal delivery but suffered heavy bleeding. As her condition grew worse, she was shifted to another hospital on doctor’s advice. She underwent treatment there for about five days but showed no signs of recovery. She died in the hospital on Thursday.

Doctors at the hospital where she died said that Varsha had sustained injuries on her uterus and hence suffered severe loss of blood. They also informed that she had epilepsy attack which reportedly aggravated her condition resulting in death.

Holding the hospital where she conceived, responsible for her death, Varsha’s relatives and locals staged a protest in front of the hospital on Friday. They also demanded that they wouldn’t remove the body until the District Superintendent arrived.

Upon receiving information, SP Annamalai rushed to the hospital and consoled the family. He was informed that it was the third such case reported at the hospital and held the hospital authorities responsible for all the three deaths. Annamalai asked them to file a police complaint pertaining to the case and also offered another autopsy if the family members wanted so.

Hence, though autopsy was conducted at Manipal Hospital, Varsha’s body was taken to a hospital in Ajjarakadu for another autopsy.

Managing Director of the hospital in questions denied allegations made by the gathering. He said that the hospital staff supplied as much as 25 bottles of blood to Varsha as she suffered heavy blood loss and on learning that she required advanced treatment, was referred to another hospital. He clarified that his hospital was not at fault.

Udupi town police have registered a case.
