Udupi: Burns Centre-Joint Project of Lions International and BHEL inaugurated at the District Hospit

Udupi, 19 April 2015: Burns Centre, the newly built prestigious joint project of Lions International and Bharat Electronics Limited, Bangalore (BHEL) was inaugurated at the District Hospital on Saturday, 18 April 2015 at 10.30 am by U.T. Khader, Health and Family Welfare Minister of Karnataka along with Ninaya Kumar Sorake, Urban Development and Udupi in charge Minister. Ms. Shobha Karandlaje, MP from Udupi-Chikmagalur Lok Sabha Constituency, Pramod Madhwaraj, MLA from Udupi Assembly Constituency, M.L. Shanmukh, Director, Human Resource, BHEL, Bangalore Ln. K. Suresh Prabhu, Lion District Governor of District 317 C and a number of dignitaries and Lions International members were present.
Following the inauguration of the Burns Centre a short function was held in the premises of the District Hospital. Health Minister U.T. appreciated the efforts of Lions International and Bharath Electronics Limited Bangalore for establishing the Burns Centre in the District Hospital at Udupi which would benefit to many patients who would unfortunately suffer burn injuries. He further said that the state government would provide financial assistance to the Burns Centre which would benefit the poor and marginalized. He also assured that the state government will make efforts to set up a model dialysis centre in the district hospital soon. He made an appeal to private corporate sector to take the example of BHEL and come forward to contribute constructively in the health sector. U.T. Khader also mentioned about the government’s endeavour to develop the district hospital in phased manner.
Lions District Governor Ln. K. Suresh Prabhu, in a brief speech narrated the circumstances that led to the establishment of the Burns Centre at the District Hospital. He said that when approached the management of BHEL with the proposal to establish the Burns Centre at the District Hospital, BHEL agreed to construct the block and provide the infrastructure whereas it asked the Lions International to maintain the centre. Ln. K. Suresh Prabhu said that the Lions International would be bearing the expenses towards the salaries of doctors and nurses who would be providing their service at the Burns Centre.
Health Minister U.T. Khader along with the dignitaries on the dais honoured M.L. Shanmukh with shawl, garland and fruits.
Ms. Shobha Karandlaje in her address said that there is an acute shortage of hospitals and doctors that cater to the needs of the poor in rural areas. Non availability of qualified doctors has been one of the greatest problems faced by the rural health service. In order to solve this problem, Ms. Shobha Karandlaje suggested that medical students who are willing to serve in rural health service can be provided medical education and training at the expense of the government. She congratulated Lions International and BHEL for providing Burns Centre at the Udupi District Hospital.
