Mangaluru, 17 Apr 2015: The heart valves and liver harvested from the first ever cadaveric organ donation from a brain dead patient in Dakshina Kannada has been successfully transplanted to their respective recipients in Bengaluru.

While doctors from the zonal coordination committee (ZCC) had harvested the kidney from the victim - Jeevan Vijay Fernandes, 24, from Bellur of Bantwal taluk-the same could not be used, said Dr Prashanth Marla K, medical director, A J Hospital and Research Centre.

Incidentally, Jeevan was admitted to the hospital following an accident and declared brain dead on April 13.

The family took the decision as Jeevan had expressed his desire to donate his cornea. However, they also gave their consent to harvest other organs, Dr Prashanth told reporters here, adding that Jeevan true to his name has now given a new lease of life to two persons who have been implanted with his valves and liver.

Opining that the awareness on procedures related to cadaveric organ donation is low in Dakshina Kannada district, Dr Prashanth said the first such incident which his hospital had the privilege to facilitate will only spur more such donations in the future. Observing that each cadaveric donor can give a fresh lease of life to about 50 people, he said in India, at present, only liver, kidneys, heart valve, heart and corneal donations are common, just as in the above case.

Whenever the next of kin of a person declared medically brain dead are willing to donate such a person’s organs, such willingness is in turn communicated to ZCC in Bengaluru. The ZCC, in turn, meets the necessary legal requirements, calls the recipients and their hospitals, arranges for the retrieval team, transport the organ and facilitates transplantation. The donor’s family and the recipient will not know each other’s identities, he noted.

Thanking the district administration and the Mangaluru City police for creating a green corridor to facilitate the smooth transit of the harvested organs from the hospital to Mangaluru International Airport at Kenjar near here, Dr Prashanth said the hospital has waived medical bills that Jeevan’s family owed for his treatment. "Their willingness to donate organs and save lives far outweighs the monetary aspects involved in treatment," he noted.
