Mangaluru: MU to introduce Smart Card & Data Bank

Mangaluru, 10 Apr 2015: Mangalore University (MU) will be introducing Smart Card and Data Bank from next year, said Professor K Byrappa, vice-chancellor Mangalore University here on Thursday April 9.
He was speaking on the occasion of the Blood Donation Camp organized by Mangalore University Blood Donor’s Group (MUBDG) of Communication Club, Department of Mass Communication and Journalism and PG student’s Council in association with Indian Red Cross Society, Mangalore at University Health Centre.
In his inaugural remarks Professor K Byrappa said Smart Card will contain information including name of the student, address, blood group, attendance, and other related details. A Data Bank consisting of a list of blood donors will be established and will be available in administrative office and all concerned departments, he added.
Professor K Byrappa further said that blood donation is the greatest service that one can do for the society and mankind. Mangalore University will always encourage a noble cause like blood donation, he added.
Ronald Anil Fernandes, chief guest of the function and Chairperson, Blood Bank Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), Mangalore said that, four lives could be saved in one unit of blood. Indian Red Cross Society is providing 80 percent of free blood for the needy. Along with the blood donation camp, disaster and crisis management and health related camps are organised.
In his introductory remark Professor G P Shivram, co-ordinator of Mangalore University Blood Donor’s group said that, there is great demand for blood everywhere. India is facing huge deficit of blood. Out of 10 million units only 5.5 million units of blood is generated, he added.
As against the misconception, donation of blood is harmless and safe. It can improve over all cardiovascular health, reduce heart attack and lower the risk of different types of cancer such as lung, liver, throat and stomach, said Professor Shivram.
In India there is demand for 12 million units of blood, as against nine million units of blood collected. Every two minutes someone or other is in need of blood. 38,000 donors to meet the requirement every day, he added.
This group (MUBDG) primarily helps to supply fresh blood to the needy people round the year. It has registered a list of students and staff of university employees. Every year they are also providing bloods to various people patients. Secondly, the group is conducting annual blood camp every year and the present one is the third in the series, he added.
More than 100 donors including a large number of girl students registered their name and from this 80 people donated their blood in the camp.
