Mangaluru: Yenepoya University observes World TB Day

Mangaluru, 25 Mar 2015: The departments of community medicine, microbiology, pediatrics and pulmonary medicine at Yenepoya Medical College, Yenepoya University observed World Tuberculosis Day here on Tuesday March 24. The World Health Organization theme for World TB Day is Reach 3 million: Reach, Treat, Cure Everyone.
Yenepoya Medical College principal Dr Ghulam Jeelani Qadiri made the opening remarks.
Dr Jeelani, highlighted the need to focus on the growing burden of MDR TB. He also suggested the need for operational research taking into consideration technical aspects. He sensitized how medical colleges could play a role on stopping Tuberculosis. The need for integrated approach of line departments to fight TB is important, said Dr Jeelani.
The resource persons for the day were, Dr Akshaya K M, Associate Professor, Community Medicine, Dr Rouchelle Tellis, Associate professor, Microbiology, Dr Anitha Prabhu, Professor, pediatrics and Dr Deepu, Asst Professor, chest Medicine.
Dr Akshaya K M, Associate Professor, Community Medicine, spoke on how medical college hospitals co-ordinate with the district centers to treat the growing burden of TB. He highlighted the concept of Nikshay were online reporting can be done.
Dr Rouchelle Tellis, Associate Professor, Microbiology, highlighted various molecular aspects of the disease and how newer interventions have been developed to diagnose TB.
Dr Abhay Nirgude, Professor and head of depart of community medicine, Yenepoya Medical College, welcomed the gathering and moderated the sessions for the day.
Dr Edmond Fernandes, PG department of community medicine co-ordinated the event and delivered the vote of thanks. Dr Ravindra Y M and Dr Preeti Selvaraj made notes.
Senior Professors Dr R P Pai, Dr Prakash Saldhana, Dr Poonam Naik were present among the gathering.
