Mangaluru: Former Int’l power lifter Geetha Bai finally gets some state aid

Mangaluru, 04 Mar 2015: At last, the state government recognised former world power lifting champion Geetha Bai and has given a financial aid of Rs 50,000 here on Tuesday March 3.
The district-in-charge minister Ramanatha Rai handed over the cheque to Geetha Bai during a function held at Mangala Auditorium of municipal body here on Tuesday.
Speaking on the occasion, the state youth empowerment and sports minister Abayachandra Jain said, ‘Since many years Geetha Bai was appealing for the help from the state government. She is a model sports woman to everyone. I will make sure she is employed in the sports department,’ said minister Jain.
The minister Jain instructed the director of the sports department - Venkatesh to consider Geetha Bai’s application and suggested her to furnish an application in this regard.
Plastic life of International power lifting champion
Geetha Bai earns her livelihood selling plastic in her petty shop near city bus terminus and also rolls bidi. She was the world power lifting champion in the International championship held in Finland during 1999. She has won 3 gold medals in the national level for the state and is also a champion in the Tug-of-War in the state level.
Geetha Bai speaking to the media said, ‘I am happy with the financial help. It would have been better if I have given a roof-over my head where I could live rest of my life,’ said Geetha Bai.

| Happy to know about Geetha Bai news though it is late. There is opportunity to give an appointment to Geeta Bai at Mangalore itself. In KPTCl/Mescom there is provision to appoint distinguished sport persanalities as a special case without following the general recruitment rules especially by the Head of KPTCL which was in force since the erstwhile MSEB which is still continuing. There are more persons have got chance in KPTCL including Mescom. The local leaders should get this benefit to Geetha Bai. According to me, the MD KPTCL can exercise this powers for 10 sports personalities made name in State or National level. | |
