M’luru: Municipal Council to hold awareness campaigns for effective solid waste mgmt

Mangaluru, 01 Mar 2015: The civic body seeks the support of citizens in its drive to collect garbage from doorsteps, said municipal commissioner Hephsiba Rani Korlapati.
Addressing the media persons at municipal building here on Saturday February 28, Hephsiba said, ‘It’s essential that awareness is created regarding the segregation of waste by the citizens. Every Wednesday of the week will be particularly allotted for collecting dry waste and the remaining 6 days will be allotted to wet waste as it is easier to decompose the waste if this pattern is followed. The awareness campaign in this regard will commence soon and will go on for at least next 2 months,’ said Hephsiba.
‘If the people understand their responsibility and stop littering waste everywhere, we can make Mangaluru 100 percent clean city,’ added Hephsiba.
The press note circulated during the meet said that the Antony Waste Handling Agency has been given 7 years term for solid waste management in the city. ‘The process of collecting SWM Cess along with property tax has been initiated and directed the waste generators not to pay monthly user fee charges to door-to-door collectors.
The note said that the agency has allotted 74 tippers and conventional vehicles and 35 compactors (10 tons and 6 tons) lorries including over 300 workmen for the task. It works on door-to-door collection and secondary transportation of solid waste management. In addition to it, ten more primary collection vehicles are expected to reach by March 10, stated the media release.
Besides, a GPS system is being set up in all the primary and secondary transportation vehicles for online accessibility to track vehicle movement. As many as 8 CCTV cameras are being deployed at the compost plant to monitor the weighbridge recording as well as unloading area near landfill.
Closed lorry-tippers for collection of littering spots and street swept wastes will be deployed from March 1, by completely phasing out usage of open lorries. The city corporation will be making use of Swach Bharath logo in all its office correspondence letters from March 1, the press note stated.
Mayor Mahabala Marla who addressed the media persons said that the civic body will render all the support to municipal commissioner to implement any programme for the betterment of the city.
