Udupi/Shirva, 04 Feb 2015: The week long centenary celebration and festivities of Our Lady of Health Church, Shirva culminated with the first Post Centenary Parish Feast in which the entire parish participated with great devotion and grandeur on Wednesday, 4 February 2015 at 10.30 am.

The Centenary celebration had started in the last week on Thursday, 29 January 2015 with the grand ‘Horekanike’ procession, the first of its kind in Shirva with the overwhelming participation by the parishioners of the Shirva Varado and neighbouring parishes as well by non-Christian brothers. Relgious Day was observed on Friday, 30 January 2015 that had good participation from religious men and women belonging to Shirva parish. The solemn Centenary celebration was held in the morning of Saturday, 31 January 2015 with the concelebration of Centenary Thanksgiving Mass by four Bishops and a large number of priests. This was followed by valedictory function in the evening of the same day. Confraternity Sunday was observed on 1 February 2015, Vespers on Tuesday, 3 February 2015 and finally the first Post Centenary Annual Feast was celebrated on Wednesday, 4 February 2015.

Prior to the solemn feast mass, Rev. Fr. Stany Tauro, Parish Priest of Shirva distributed candles of honour to the founders, patrons, benefactors, officials of the church, educational institutions, Convents, parish associations and all the donors and sponsors. The names were read by Secretary William Machado and Vice President Wilson D’Souza.

The solemn Annual Feast Mass began at 10.30 am. Rev. Fr. Ian Figreido (Salesian), Provincial of  Goa-Karnataka was the chief celebrant. Other concelebrants included Msgr. Baptist Menezes, Vicar General of Udupi Diocese, Rev. Fr. Stany Tauro, Parish Priest of Shirva and other priests from the Shirva Deanery and other guest priests.

Rev. Fr. Simon Fernandes, Rector of Don Bosco Youth Centre, Shirva, in his homily highlighted the role of mother in the lives of great men including St. Augustine, Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Alva Edison. He said that it was due to their mothers that these three men achieved their greatness. Recalling the role of Mother Mary in the life of Jesus, Rev. Fr. Simon Fernandes said that Mother Mary has been the guardian of the church and everyone who seeks her help. Further he said that the centenary celebration of the church that went on in such a smooth and excellent manner was not less than a miracle of  Our Lady of Health.

The offertory procession was unique as along with other offerings six men in white shirt and dhoti carried six different items on their heads such as ‘muda’ of rice, large basket full of vegetables, fruits and flowers.

The church was packed to capacity and every available space was occupied by the parishioners and guests in best of their dress and jewellery. Those who were unable to view the main altar could watch the   proceedings through close circuit TV (CCTV).

At the end of the Mass, Rev. Fr. Stany Tauro expressed gratitude to all those who had helped in many ways in the celebration of the weeklong Centenary observation and the Annual Parish Feast.

The main altar was aesthetically decorated with varieties of flowers. The choir with its melodious singing enhanced the festive atmosphere.

Devotees of Our Lady of Health, Christian and non-Christian were seen lighting the candles and offerings in the specially arranged pandal to the left side of the church.

The fair that is usually associated with the annual feasts (Santmari) with various stalls and entertainment avenues attracted  a large number of festive revellers.
