First Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Sammelan held in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, 21 Dec 2014: Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy hosted the first Konkani Sahitya Sammelan at Scouts and Guides Auditorium, Lalbagh here on Saturday December 20.
Veteran Kannada writer and Nrupatunga Awardee recipient Kum Veerabhadrappa inaugurated the Sammelan by drawing the large-sized pen out of its top.
Veerabhadrappa in his inaugural address emphasized on the historical significance of Konkani and Konkans. He said, ‘More than 70 lac people across the world speak Konkani that was prevalent during the reigns of Gupta and Chola dynasties that ruled India. Konkani and Tulu survived the onslaught of western influence,’ said Veerabhadrappa.
‘Konkans were always known for their patriotism and fighting spirit. They are the people known for their soft nature and goodwill,’ said Veerabhadrappa.
‘Language is the goddess. The community thrives with language and are inter-dependent on each other for sustenance,’ said Veerabhadrappa.
Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy president Roy Castelino expressed remorse over the recent episode of council speaker for not allowing MLC Ivan D’Souza to speak in Konkani that is one of classic language bestowed by Indian constitution. The Academy has written letter to council chairman D H Shankeramurthy demanding justification over the issue, said Roy.
Unya Bhavadtache, Konkani huge volume novel authored by Edwin J F D’Souza and Ayeraso Book, Konkani poetry authored by Andrew D’Cunha were released on the same occasion.
Konkani veteran litterateur Eddie Netto presided the the first ever Konkani Sammelan.
After the valedictory function of Sammelan, Konkani Somskrutik Mel (Konkani cultural extravaganza was held at Karavali Utsav grounds. A colourful procession of Konkani diverse cultural groups was held on the occasion.
