Udupi: Shirva - MSW Students help unorganized labors to get Labor Cards

Udupi, 25 Nov 2014: ‘Reaching out to the most needy and unorganized sector of the society, helping them to help themselves, is the core of Professional Social Work.’ This is proved true by the students of MSW department of St Mary’s College, Shirva.

 

The students walked into the community identifying the deserving construction laborers and auto drivers to help them to secure the Labor Cards from the Labor Office, Udupi.

 

The Labor Card distribution Programme was organized in collaboration with Labour Office Udupi, at Shirva here recently.

 

 

Jnanesh, the Labor Officer, Udupi, in his inaugural speech briefed about various Government schemes available to the workers and the benefits of having the labor cards by the workers. He also stated about the upcoming ‘NPS LIGHT PROJECT’ for unorganized laborers. He added that the Udupi Labor Office is first on the list of the state for reaching out to all the people helping them to avail the Government Schemes. There were 53 cards distributed to the beneficiaries.

 

Professor Rajan V N, principal of St Mary’s College, Shirva in his presidential speech appreciated workers who enrolled their name in the labor office and secured their cards. This will help them to take the benefit in times of accidents and also for the education of their children. He complemented the students of MSW for being the instruments in reaching out to those who are needy beside their excellent academic performance.

 

The chief guests were Manohar Shetty, the owner of Mandara Hotel Shirva, complimented the good work of the students. 

 

Leena Mathias, former Zilla Panchayat vice president of DK district, appealed to create awareness among the workers so that large numbers of people get the benefit of Labor cards. 

 

Laxmi Acharya, co-coordinator of MSW department, faculty members Shobha D’Souza, Vignesh and Mohammed Naseer of St Mary’s College, Shirva were present in the programme.
