Mangaluru, 23 Nov 2014: Center for Health and Development in collaboration with Milagres Group of Educations Institutions held a NSS special camp at Guttakaadu village, Kinnigoli, near here on Sunday November 23.

Dr Sanjay Kini, project head of Center for Health and Development, spoke on road traffic accidents and first-aid in emergencies.

Dr Kini began his talk by sensitizing students to different causes and risk factors related to road accidents. He enumerated the importance of first aid that is required to be given to the victim of road traffic accidents and highlighted the need for the golden hour.

Dr Kini said, ‘It is unfortunate to see that people step back when there is a need for helping and providing a first aid to a road accident victim. The reason behind this is the fear of enquiry and fulfillment of other legal requirements by police and the court of law.’

He also said that at present the law allows everyone to help anyone, who is a road accident victim.

Dr Kini presented and demonstrated various ways of first-aid treatment during different types of accidents with the help of student volunteers.

He further said that there are different types of treatments for different groups of people. Treating the road accident victims is the need for the hour and there is a serious scarcity in terms of educating people and training them.

This special camp was organized for sensitizing the people under NSS annual camp for the institute.

Milagres College principal Fr Francis Gomes, Professor Mamatha K and other staff members were present.

The students also visited the tribal households and other villagers and briefed them on different aspects of health care and development. they were engaged in different activities which included exercise, cleanliness and surveys.

It is time the educational institutions consider teaching safety to their students seriously. It is not a good sign of practical education when we read students killed in road accidents, drowned etc and take for granted and say "it is normal" every where. First aid comes next, whereas prevention comes first. The tribal dance picture with pig hanging upside down may not go well with animal lovers.
