Mangaluru: Konkani students appear for exams of Mangalore University

Mangaluru, Nov 21, 2014: Sixty-five students of 3 different colleges, who opted for Konkani as optional subject, appeared for first semester exams of Mangalore University here on Friday November 21.
Its because of concerted efforts of Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy, Konkani studies were begun in colleges, while 45 students of Paduva College, 12 students of Rosario College and 8 students of Pompeii College – Kirem appeared for the exams here on Friday morning.
Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy president Roy Castelino said, ‘It’s a milestone event in Konkani studies.’ He thanked Mangalore University vice-chancellor Professor K Bairappam registrar Professor P S Yadapadittaya, Principal Fr Michael Santumayor, Fr Alwyn Serrao, Dr John Clarence Miranda and others for this great opportunity.
The state government has issued permission to teach Konkani from 2007. The students are appearing for Konkani exams since the past 3 years. Konkani also allowed opting for higher studies. It has to issue permission to begin Konkani classes in degree courses at the earliest, said the Academy registrar Dr Devdas Pai.
