Mangalore, Oct 28, 2014: Probably the only centurion in the state who still has an extended driving license and still drives his car, Robert Michal D’Souza speaking to the media on Monday October 27 said that the today’s youth should not don’t drink and drive and not to be a reason for someone’s death.
The centurion Robert was interacting with the media and his well wishers who gathered at Ravidra Kala Mantap of University College here on Monday October 27.
It was something to cherish for all those who heard the centurion speaking his heart out on the occasion.
When asked about the secret of his fitness he said, ‘I drink a peg of whisky every night and that has become a habit for me. I eat rice along with the curd. I eat non-veg occasionally as ‘my machine’ has become old. I don’t want to put the machine under stress,’ said Robert.
When asked whether he had the habit of smoking, the old chap surprised everyone by saying that he used to smoke 5 packs of cigarettes and has given it up 15 years ago.
Well, it was a long-awaited moment come true for the journalists who were waiting for the old man to cut his cake on his 100th birthday, but the health of the old man had not co-operated due to which all had to return with pale faces from the Canara college auditorium here on October 16.
Meanwhile, all his well wishers and friends who gathered at Ravindra Kala Mantap here on Monday October 27, congratulated centurion Robert for crossing the milestone event with good health and super spirits.
The humble centurion apologized for not able to attend his scheduled birthday celebration on October 16.
University College principal Dr Satyanarayana Mallipatti wished good luck for Robert.
Dr Satyanarayana said, ‘The centenary celebrations of the celebrities gather much publicity and pomp. But a simple man’s celebration lacks publicity. It is one of the rarest occasions wherein we get to interact with a centurion yet a healthy man. Even though he is a common man and man of simplicity he has a rare personality. This day will remain in our memories for many years. I pray with the divine grace Robert will celebrate 125th birthday and hope we will get a chance to witness the same,’ said Dr Satyanarayana.
The rationalist Narendra Nayak, Sitaram and others were present on the occasion.
