Udupi, 23 Oct 2014: The communal harmony is not just a message, it’s not in any song, and instead it has to be practiced in our everyday living.  At this fast changing world, one is in dilemma when the religion, belief, sympathy would vanish someday. We use them as weapon in our daily activities.  Deepavali, Yugadi, Sankranti are festivals that are farming oriented.  The farming has been done with the collective involvement of all communities, it’s due to which they are significant in the society.  At the jet set age, farming sphere is losing its sheen and festivals are taking away our happiness.  Therefore, the festivals are limited to mere celebrations.  The festivals have no significance till such time, when we don’t foster cordial relations among brethrens in the society. The recent developments are killing the worth of festivals.  The festivals are meaningful, provided we share the same joy among brethrens in the society in our everyday living. The communal harmony does not lies in sky lamps and sweets, said renowned intellectual Professor K Faniraj.

Professor Faniraj was speaking during Friendly Deepavali Celebration that was organized in association with Communal Harmony Committee, Catholic Sabha and St Francis Xavier parish at Hindu Higher Primary School, Udyavar, here on Thursday October 23.

Professor Faniraj further said, ‘Mahatma Gandhi did not call himself as Hindu or contemporary.  There were no portraits of Gods in his Ashram.  He would read the scriptures from Upanishad, Quran, Bible and Granth Saheb during prayer meetings.  He would deliver homily related to its significance on daily living.  He had asked the people not to attend the prayer meetings, because some of them objected reading the scriptures of Quran aftermath of communal violence in 1946.  Its truly communal harmony that is the need of the hour,’ said Professor Faniraj.

Fr Leslie D’Souza, parish priest of St John’s parish, Shankarapura, near here said that Deepavali is the festival of light that brings hope for mankind.  It’s the universal festival of people of all faiths.  The festivals in recent times are commercialized and thereby losign its significance.  Let the festivals strengthen community bond in the society rather than create discord, said Fr Leslie.

Dakshina Kannada district Muslim writers Association president Sayyed Ismail said that all religions of the world propagate love.  Meanwhile, the people who have wrong notions about religion are spreading hatredness in the society.  The friendly celebrations of festivals among people of different faith will restore trust, said Ismail.
