Mangalore: CHD marks International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction with mock fire drill

Mangalore, Oct 14, 2014: On occasion of International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, Center for Health and Development (CHD) and Roshni Nilaya School of Social Work, Mangalore in association with The Mangalore Fire Station, Karnataka Fire and Emergency services conducted a mock fire drill at Roshni Nilaya School of social work Campus Ground here on Monday October 13.
The program began at 12:30 pm with the arrival of Chief Fire Officer, H S Varadarajan, who briefed the gathering regarding the different types of disasters that can occur in day-to-day life and the means of tackling them effectively with a strong presence of mind.
Varadarajan explained different types of disaster scenarios and emphasized on the potential hazards that can complicate the disaster if not managed at the first step itself.
The fire drill ensued with demonstrations by the fire station team on how to use a fire-extinguisher. Steps such as breaking the seal and aiming for the fire-base were demonstrated.
Advanced Ladder Platform Vehicle was used to educate the public of how the firemen could reach in times of such potential disasters.
Dr Meena, faculty of Roshni Nilaya School of Social Work, co-ordinated the events. The Fire drill lasted for around 35 minutes.
Dr Sophia Fernandes, principal of Roshni Nilaya School of Social Work and Dr Deepika Kamath, Head – Collaborations, CHD – India thanked the gathering.
Dr Sanjay Kini, project head, Cynthia - manager, Arun – program co-ordinator, Delma – health artist, Anam Patel – manager and others were present.
