Kundapur, 12 Oct 2014: Government hospitals have never been in a position to compete with the private set ups because of the negligent attitude of the staff. In another glaring example of this neglect, an elderly man who had died in the government hospital ward here in Kundapur skipped the notice of the staff. It ultimately took the health Minister to notice that the man was no more.

Minister for Health U T Khader was in Kundapur to attend a programme and carrying forward his distinct style of work, Khader decided to pay a surprise visit to local government hospital on Saturday night.

At about 8 pm, Khader inspected the attendance register of the hospital and other facilities and on special request from the locals, he visited the ward and had a conversation with the patients and their family. However, by the time he reached the bed of Seena Ganiga, a patient from Vinayaka Kodi and tried to talk to him, the patient was numb. The Minister instantly called the duty doctor and nurses and asked them to check on his pulse. It was only then that the staff realised that the patient was dead. Neither the doctors nor the nurses were aware of this and as per other patient nobody is actually aware when Sheena Ganiga must have died.

The locals also brought to the attention of the people the fact that the mortuary was in bad state and the doctors working the hospital were more concerned about their private practice.

Duty Doctor Anita failed to give convincing replies to the questions of the Minister.

The Minister addressing the reporters later said that though the hospital had adequate staff and was well-equipped the negligent attitude of the staff was harming the reputation of the hospital.

He directed the District Health Officer to set the situation right in the hospital at the earliest.
