Mumbai: Jagruti Kendra celebrates Girl Child Day in metro

Mumbai, 01 Oct 2014: Jagruti Kendra is an organization working for peace, secularism and social justice since 25 years; with marginalized and unprivileged people, promoting women empowerment and encouraging youth activities, focusing on environmental issues and achieving its objectives by creating awareness in form of education. There are different activities, sessions and programs initiated by Jagruti Kendra, of which Girl Child Celebration is an important program.

 

The Girl Child Day was celebrated on Sunday September 28 at St Jude’s church, organized by Jagruti Kendra staff and NN students. Girls between the age group of 14-20 years had attended the program; around 135 girls were present for the program.

 

The Girl Child Day is celebrated so that the girls could put forth their thoughts and express themselves and also to motivate them; make aware of their rights and to fight against any kind of discrimination, misbehavior or violence they face. It was a successful program involving the girls of all the 5 zones.

 

The program started with an awareness song and a few slogans, later Sr.Seema- Director, Fr Lancy – manager of Jagruti Kendra and the group leaders by each zone came forward to light the lamp.

 

 

Sr Seema spoke a few words for the girls and welcomed them with a song. The resource person - Sr Dominica also spoke about importance of Girl Child and the violence they face.

 

SSC topper Ellsi Chettiar was felicitated and Priyanka Suares for actively participating in all the children and youth program of Jagruti Kendra.

 

Girls from different zones presented various programmes - a skit on ‘Stree Bhurnya Hatya’ (female feticide), ‘Ched-Chad’ (eve teasing, dances like patriotic, koli and cultural dance.

 

Other than these spot prizes were conducted for active participation. All the performances were liked and appreciated by everyone. Most importantly all acts gave an impressive message for viewers. Towards the end of the program games were organized for each zone.

 

The program was concluded by vote of thanks followed by National Anthem. Girls were also given gifts and snacks after the program.

 

The program was a great success with all the efforts put Jagruti Kendra staff and NN students.
