Riyadh: Roshan Rodrigues and Pramila Rodrigues Qualify for GVOM - 4 Finals

Riyadh, Sep 22, 2014: The semi-final round of the Gulf Voice of Mangalore (GVOM) Season 4 proved every bit to be an entertaining as well as a nail-biting contest, at the end of which Roshan Philip Rodrigues, Bendur (Gavngo Chedva Muzo Gavngo) and Pramila Rodrigues, Udupi (Muja Kalzachi Haryek Udi) were declared as ‘Voice of Arabia.’  The GVOM 2014 semi-final was organized by Aangann Konknnechem, here on Friday September 19.
 
 
The winners will now expand their horizon of singing talent and put their skills to test at the grand finale which will be held at Muscat, Sultanate of Oman on November 7. Vishwa Konkani Kala Ratn Eric Ozario and Yodelling King Melwyn Peris from Mangalore were the honorable jurors at GVOM semi-finals in Riyadh.
 
 
The programme was compered by Ronald Olivera from Dubai, who added much charm to the event with his dashing and enigmatic style, and announced the opening of GVOM 2014 semi-final in Riyadh. He made a grand entry to the beat of music, accompanied by a thunderous applause from the audience. The programme began with a welcome dance by Megha Riya followed by a welcome speech by the AKR president Arun D’Souza.

The main sponsor Mr. Anil and Flossy Albuquerque, co sponsors Mr. Kevin and Muriel Nazareth, Judges Bab Eric Ozario, Bab Melwyn Peris and AKR President  Arun D’Souza lighted the lamp and inaugurated the competition. The six female contestants were Shallet D’Silva (Bendur), Nirmala Castelino (Shankarpura), Chinnu D’Souza (Bantwal), Mridula Dias (Barkur), Inish Fernandes (Mudrangadi) and Pramila Rodrigues (Udupi) along with six male contestants Roshan Philip Rodrigues (Bendur), Jerald Rodrigues (Gurpur), Ambrose Corderio (Venoor), Lancy Lasrado (Bantwal), Vincent Moras (Barkur) and Alfred Fernandes Sirsi were escorted to the stage by the Secretary and Co-Ordinator of Aangann team Roshan Glen Lobo and Carol D’Souza and were introduced to the crowd by compare Mr Ronald Olivera. Carol D’Souza, Mangalore thanked all the sponsors and Mr. Arun D’Souza honored and felicitated them on stage with a Shawl and a floral bouquet.  The honorable Judges were also felicitated with a Shawl and memento. The Compare and contestants were felicitated with mementos as well.

 

The competition began with the curtain-raiser song "Gulf Voice of Mangalore". The cultural programme began with a foot thumping dance performance by the talented and enthusiastic Caron Reena D’Souza (Mudarangadi), the sisters duo Chrishal and Geshal Mendonca (Mudrangadi), Alisha Corderio (Venoor), and Melissa Paula to the tune of popular hindi music. The crowd also witnessed a ’dhamdaar’ performance by the dynamic brothers Karan Raj and Kiran Raj Nazareth (Udupi) to the popular music from ’Dabangg’. No dance is complete without a touch of Indianess to it, and rightly so we were spellbound by a Bharatnatyam dance performance by Sharon and Shalom Fernandes (Shirthady). More colour was added by the black and white ’Robot Dance’ number performed by the youngsters from " Brothers Group" Riyadh. The children had carved a place for themselves among the audience with their electrifying performances. It was indeed a treat for sore eyes! 

 

The adults were not far behind. A rib tickling skit ‘Dunga’ was put together by Herald D’Souza (Mudrangadi), Inish Fernandes (Mudarangadi) and Roshan Lobo (Bondel) had everyone laughing their hearts out. The crowd went hysterical right from the word go as they watched a comedy show called " The room rent" staged by Glen Roshan Lobo ( Bondel), Roshan Rodrigues (Bendur) and Carol D’Souza (Urva). They left the audience laughing for a very long time adding fun and a dash of happiness inside the hall. 

 

Ronald Olivera amused the audience with his witty and original jokes. Bab Eric Ozario and Bab Melwyn Peris mesmerized the audience as they set the stage on fire. The atmosphere at the venue changed as they sang melodies konkani numbers that had the audience on their feet. It was an opportunity never to be missed. The lively atmosphere finally disperesed to the dining area where delicious food was awaiting the guests.

 

In this occasion Konkan Sardar Wilson Oliveras “Naveekarann” Konkani Hits Vol.7 inaugurated by Bab Eric Ozario, Melwyn Peris, Arun Palimar along with Ronald Olivera.

 

Roshan Lobo, secretary of Aangann Konknechem Riyadh proposed the vote of thanks. The programme came to an end with the announcement of the winners of the Voice of Arabia contest. While everyone in the auditorium waited with bated breath for the results, the announcement itself was splendid, not just because of the deafening applause that followed it, but also because of the expression of triumph as well as intense emotion that it brought upon the face of the winners. It was indeed an evening to cherish for a very long time.

Eric Ozario

Known as a singer, performer, music composer, innovator, organiser, campaigner, trainer, leader-promoter-founder - Eric Ozario has been a full-time Konkani cultural activist since 1984. As a singer he has sung countless songs for shows, recordings and albums and has recorded 30 albums (25 Mandd Sobhann and 5 others). He has performed in over 800 shows all over India and abroad, and has also performed on TV (national and local). He has composed tunes for over a 1000 songs, mostly written by renowned poets, and has also written a few songs. He has successfully proposed and conducted 21 unique experimentations in Konkani music and culture. Innovations such as Mandd Sobhann, Bhakti Sobhann, Aangann Sobhann, Jeevan Sobhann, Mattov Sobhann, Gumott Sobhann, Bhurgyanlem Sobhann, Pallnnya Sobhann, Moga Sobhann, Nach Sobhann, Sangeet Sobhann, Bosnni, Dabazo, Sobhann Sanz, Konkani Darshan, Baila experiment, Brass Band Concerts are just a few of the examples.

 

Eric Ozario has been at the helm of many mega events of national and international importance – ‘Porob’, ‘Saanth’, Manddo Fest, Manddo Utsav, World’s  First Baila Show, Baila International, Konkani Nirantari (Guinness World Record), the First World Konkani Cultural Convention (25 days) etc. He has held important posts, including president of Karnataka Sahitya Konkan Academy and Gurkar of Mandd Sobhann. He has also won several awards and recognitions from government as well as associations around the world for his unflinching service to Konkani. He has been bestowed with titles such as ’Konkani Kala Samrat’, ’Vishwa Konkani Kala Ratn’, ’Bhonvddi Sardar’, ’Sardarancho Sardar’ – ’95 (v) ‘Konkani Sanskrutik Raibari’ – ’96 (vi) ‘ Konkani Kranti Veer’ – ‘97 (vii)‘ Vishwa Konkani Karbari – 2008.

 

Melwyn Peris

Melwyn Peris started singing at the age of 6 at the parish and inter-parish level singing competitions and won many prizes under the guidance of his late brother Denis Peris. He is known as the ’Yodelling King’, because of his great gift of yodelling, a style of alto head voice singing, this and ’Konkani Kala Ratna’ has composed songs of distinct quality. He can sing with absolute ease ranging his melodious voice over a unique and whopping two and a half octaves, sounding equally charming at its every stage. On account of his yodelling style of singing, he is sometimes fittingly referred to as the "Kishore Kumar" of Konkani music.

 

Melwyn Peris’ contribution to Konkani music includes 96 nites, 27 volumes of songs and 17 volumes of devotional songs. Famous for baila songs (total 43 volumes), his 100th nite or the Centenary Nite is scheduled to take place on 23rd November, 2014at St. Agnes Special School grounds, Bendur, Mangalore. He has been a choir master of Angelore Church for over 30 years. 

 

He is also an actor and has won the best actor award in drama competitions conducted by Kala Sampath. He has performed alongside Konkan Kogull Wilfy Rebimbus, Henry D’Souza and the late P H Pinto, and sung for almost all old and new composers. He was invited to compose, sing and conduct on the occasion of Raknno’s diamond jubilee celebration, and he also composed and led the singing group for the inaugural song for Christha Jayanthi 2000, consisting 200 singers.

 

Melwyn Peris is the proud recipient of many awards for his contribution in the field of popularizing Konkani music. He has been honored by many social and religious groups. Many of his songs have won the "Song of the Year" award.

Ronald Olivera

Ronald Olivera is a well-known master of ceremony with complete command and fluency in English, Konkani, Hindi, Kannada and Tulu. He has not only compered shows for most of the Konkani singers/artistes (Wilfy Rebimbus, Henry D’Souza, Melwyn Peris, Wilson Olivera, Claud D’Souza, MickMax, Maxim Pereira, Lancy Moras, Esther Noronha and Goan Nightingale Lorna) but also performed in the shows of many Indian artistes such as Kottayam Nazir, Mohammad Aslam, Nadarsha, S.Janaki, and many others. 

 

Time and again, he has proven that he could handle the mega events with utmost ease and to the entire satisfaction of the audience from all walks of life. A hit program “Raymond the Complete Man” Personality Pageant in Bahrain in 2001 spoke volumes of his capability as a compere. Ronald Olivera is a member of Toastmasters International, a worldwide organization that fosters public speaking and leadership qualities. Ronald Olivera has won numerous awards in international and Gulf-level speech competitions. He has the recognition of being the only toastmaster in the Gulf to win three international awards in International Taped Speech contests. 

 

He is also the only toastmaster to win four, first places in four consecutive years in Gulf-level competitions. He also has to his credit of winning three awards in one single Gulf Toastmasters annual convention held in Muscat, Oman in 2002. He is also a renowned Konkani writer, with more than 100 short stories and above 150 articles already published in various Konkani magazines.

 

Aangann Konknechem Riyadh is a non-profitable organization involved in promoting Konkani culture and language through various programs in Riyadh. It has also conducted several programmes to help the youth to promote their talent ever since its inception in 2007. The association has been helping the poor for their educational needs and also involved with several charitable institutions in Mangalore. It made history in Saudi Arabia by hosting the Konkani talent hunt show in the Kingdom ‘The Gulf Voice of Mangalore’, allowing avid singers to flourish and to entertain an eager audience.
