Mangalore: Mayor Marla urges heads of edu Institutions to take precautions on drug abuse

Mangalore, 20 Sep 2014: As the drug addiction among the students are increasing of late, the education institutions themselves are expected to take precautions in this regard, said mayor Mahabala Marla.
The mayor Marla was speaking after inaugurating seminar on alcohol and drugs abuse at Gokarnanat College auditorium, here on Saturday September 20. It was jointly organized by Karnataka state alcohol de-addiction Board, information and public relations department.
He further said, ‘In the past only the illiterates were hooked on to this habit. Meanwhile, the drug addiction of highly educated youth is a dangerous development. I have discussed this issue with police and health department in order to curb drub abuse in Mangalore city,’ said mayor Marla.
The people who get clue of drug menace ought to inform the concerned department at once. The deserted corners of city are frequented by drug peddlers during the nights. The drug mafia is keeping on shifting its base all over the city. The teenagers are becoming slave to drugs, said mayor Marla. He said the seminar will create much needed awareness among the students in this regard.
The health department education officer Jayaram Poojary in his talk said that alcohol and drug addicts have no respect in their families and society because they are destructive. The consumption of gutka is responsible for 90 percent of cancer cases in India. The students and civil society had to keep away from evil habits, said Poojary.
Gokarnanat College principal Gangadhar presided the programme.
The information officer B A Khadersha delivered the introductory talk. The College NSS officer Sujaya Suvarna proposed vote of thanks. Francis Lewis compered the programme.
The artiste Gunduraj led puppetry group from Hassan presented puppet show depicting social message after the stage programme.
