Mangalore: Nine detained by police for assault on students
Mangalore, 19 Sep 2014: Nine Bajrang Dal activists were detained on Friday by Mangalore Rural police pertaining to assault on six students of a college at Pumpwell on Thursday. This prompted protests from Dal members claiming that they were not involved in the incident.
The detained have been identified as Dal leaders Bhujanga Kulal, Puneeth Pumpwell, Pramod Suvarna and others.
During the assault one of the victims Kalandar Shahid sustained serious injuries on his head. The other victims were Mohammed Shahad, Shameem, Ashique, Asfatulla and Shahbaz, all 18, students of Mangalore Institute of Fire Safety Engineering.
Mangalore Rural police have booked case against Pratish and 14 others. Though it was said the attackers belonged to Saffron group, police said they have not been identified with any organisation.
The reason for the attack was not clear, but sources said it was pertaining to taking photographs along with girls during a recent college function last week which had led to altercation and escalated into the attack on Thursday. The victims said the assailants came in a vehicle, assaulted them with iron rods and fled.
